Why HubPages is still my favourite revenue sharing website in spite of Google Panda

Changes at HubPages cause problems

Over the past year or so there have been a lot of changes at HubPages and many new rules brought in and this has resulted in a lot of people not being happy with the site and actually leaving. A big part of the problem was caused by Google and what is known as the Google Panda Update which resulted in a considerable drop in the income of hubbers and traffic to their articles. I am not going to get into explaining what all this is about because people have been discussing this ever since it happened, and I am certainly no expert on the workings of Google.

I was and am one of those affected badly by this though and have seen the money I was being able to count on every month diminish to such an extent that some months I no longer have enough for payout. I fully admit to have been one of the most vocal hubbers who have complained in the forums about what has happened here. I am in the process of moving a lot of my hubs off the site and republishing them elsewhere. But this does not mean I am going. I am happy to keep my account with HubPages and to post articles here, and now I will tell you why!

How I got started at HubPages

It was over four years ago that I first discovered HubPages, signed up, created a profile and published my first hub. I think I wrote about my American singer-songwriter friend Lynn Carey Saylor and her friendship with the legendary Brian May of Queen. If that wasn’t my first hub it was certainly one of my earliest.

I had been searching the Internet for ways of making money online and saw somewhere an entry that recommended HubPages as a site you could earn money from for publishing your articles. I am a writer so thought I would give it a go.

Making money at HubPages

I was soon to find that I felt very at home here so I wasn't that worried about making money at HubPages at that point because I could see a lot of other benefits in using the site. I enjoyed the ease of navigation and how simple it was to create and publish your articles. HubPages provides modules so you can add photos and videos, maps, links and other options that help make your hubs more interesting for the reader and should help you increase traffic to your site.

Although I enjoyed the easy way provided here for a user to create good quality magazine-style articles it took me a long time to actually make any money, which was why I had signed up to begin with. In fact although I was using Google Adsense, Amazon and eBay ads displayed with my hubs it actually took me over a year to make my first $100.

However, other hubbers told me that this was often the case and that once you had achieved this milestone you could expect more money to come your way on a far more regular basis. This I found to be true and it showed me that it was true, that publishing articles at HubPages could provide you with a source of income from freelance writing for an Internet website. I was hooked!

Other reasons I liked HubPages

I also had made a lot of new friends in the HubPage community, many of whom have remained friends although they may no longer use this site. I found HubPages to be a very friendly site where people were happy to explain things if you got stuck. Staff would interact by posting their comments in the forums. It was a very interactive community.

I discovered as well that HubPages is a positive mine of information on just about any subject you can think of. Some fellow hubber will have written a top quality hub about any topic you care to search for.

As a writer too I started using the site as a place to showcase my work. I could easily refer someone to a link to my hub on a specific topic. I took pride in my articles here and have actually got work elsewhere because an employer was impressed with what they saw here.

It was for these reasons I stuck around and didn’t worry about whether money was coming in or not. Now admittedly in those days I had a regular job, which I no longer have, and was not so much in need of regular payments as I am now, but I am currently earning a lot more here now than I was for all the months of my first year here.

Being an Optimist

I am an optimist by nature and so I am hopeful that things will start improving here again. I have nothing to lose by leaving a lot of my more successful hubs here and possibly much to gain.

I am staying put, thinking positively and giving it all another go! And like the Monty Python comedy show once reminded us to "always look on the bright side of life"!

A Learning Experience

Recent changes at HubPages with the new system of ‘Idling’ hubs or classing them as ‘Normal’ because they were not performing well or getting good traffic at first annoyed me. HubPages is putting a letter H against your successful writings and calling them Featured Hubs. A lot of mine haven’t made the grade, not because they are not good quality, but because they do not work well here.

HubPages staff are doing what they can to get the site back to how it once was and I can understand why they have made changes here. I can also understand that my writings might well be more successful on other revenue sharing websites such as Wizzley and so I am moving a lot of them. But many of my hubs will be staying here and I am hopeful that my earnings will start going back up again! Like I said, I am an optimist!

Hey Bard. I think we are all in the same boat here. A leaky boat at the moment, however. Like you, I once made a fair bit of cash here and enjoyed doing so, as well as, communicating with some of the great community members when the forums were worth using.

As of now it seems it's a roller coaster ride with so many changes and programs going on one can hardly keep up. I am disappointed in the blatant favoritism I once argued against being so obvious on the site.

I hope HP recovers from their terrible mistake of allowing so much garbage to be published here in the past. Garbage WE are paying for now because they were greedy and allowed anyone to publish on the site despite the junk being submitted.

No, I am not happy here now but still hope someone at HP will wake up and listen to the writers before this place hits rock bottom as so many similar sites have.

SSSSS

Hi Bard, I to plan to stick around. I have read a lot from what other writers have said in regard to all the changes here. I am an optimist as well. I see you are on a site called PubWage, that is new to me I never heard of it. I plan to check it out just to see what it is like.

Thanks for your posts, loveofnight and adrienne! PubWages is run by Aya Katz who you might know from here.

adrienne2 4 years ago

Wow, I do remember Katz had no idea she was running PubWages. I took a look at the site a moment ago. I may more some of my hubs that don't get traffic here just to see if they will get any traffic over there.

I don't find it as easy to use but it doesn't have all the rules this place now has. Good luck!

Hi Steve, thanks for the info... I did wonder why my traffic had dropped so low - I figured I was just having a slow-phase. I've never bothered with the forums, I don't have enough time.

I don't use banks and never have and never will, so can't get-paid by sites like-this (can't buy anything either), I have the luxury of a small (cash) job so getting paid here was never an issue - but getting readers is. I've been here 3 years and don't plan on going anywhere else just-yet, but only 'cos I'm lazy and this site's easy to use. I hope they sort-out whatever issues they've got and my readers come back. I like the site.

Hi Fen! It is good hearing from you again! You seem to have gone from Facebook. I need banks and sites like this or I'd be in a terrible mess, even worse than the one I am in! That is fantastic that you have escaped! HubPages got in this mess because of changes Google made. HubPages depends on income from Google ads just like so many of us writers do and Google has got tough on what are quality sites are not. They downgraded this one it appears due to the many badly written and spammy hubs on the site. The hub hopping plan was introduced in an effort to sort this out by asking hubbers to flag and report on badly written work they find here. It is impossible for the small staff to go through the millions of hubs checking they are up to standard. Google would argue that they have done this because they have customers who pay to have ads shown on websites and they don't want their ads run alongside shoddy articles. That's the basics of it as I understand the problem.

The video is actually a comedy sketch from a film. Even though they are all being crucified they break into song and stay smiling!

ah, that explains it. You can't blame Google for that though, but hell I hope that situation changes.

Facebook really hacked me off man, I vowed I'd never blacken their doorstep again. What really got to me was the lack-of a 'contact-us' button. There's so-many users there & even a wealthy set-up like FB can't afford enough staff to communicate with their users.

Somebody 'reported' me for totally non-abusive abusive language, and FB left my 'feed' empty. There was no-one there on the feed at-all for a couple-of-days and nothing from FB in my e mail to explain why. I sincerely wanted to ask someone what was going-on but who?

So I quit in a sulk and haven't been back.

Always look on the bright side of life - how weird... the song has been on the radio twice in the last week. You don't hear it for years and then three come at once :-)

see ya.

Fen, a lot of people get annoyed at FB myself included, but I still think it is the best social networking site and am staying put there too. There is a place to complain because I have done so in the past. Next to Home there are Settings. Click on Help.

Thank you, Prasetio!

As I've just discovered that Google+ won't take my articles anymore - it 'fails-to-upload web-site-link' - I might have to go-back there [FB]. I was only getting about 5 readers a week from FB before, so it was quite-easy for me to thumb-my-nose at them and sod-off.... starting to reconsider under the circumstances. Are you still able to post on Google+, or is it just me?

PS did complaining do any good? (I never realised there was a place to do that) I must've been on the cider or something....

My complaining at FB did no good that I know of but I found other people with the same complaints. I use Google + OK. Our mutual friend Chris tells me he lost his Google account.

I have done the same as you but I am still around. Google sucks, but we must live by their rules. I have noticed they laxes up on the language and sex issues. When I wrote my first hub after joining other writing sites and adding articles to them I was a bit surprised that they added a new feature with titles and making the hub exclusive. I have not seen much difference that has made, but then again it has only been a few weeks since I published it.

Oh and I just could not leave all the friendly, nice people and friends I have made here in the last 4 years either. When I left here for those few months it felt like I had cut my arm off or something.

I am glad you are staying around too, my friend.

I'm an optimist as you are, Steve. And that is what kept me going despite the huge drop in traffic since Panda. I continued to stay active on HubPages even though I was writing less. But I also removed a lot of hubs that were not working. That seemed to help, and I got the idea to do that from the way Matt Cutts of Google talked about how poor quality may affect the rest if our articles.

Lately, my patience is paying off as I see my traffic approaching pre-Panda days. I have also always trusted HP to be doing the right thing. After all, it's in their best interest too. What many people don't appreciate is that it takes trial and error to find the solutions.
