Why we write! Writing tips about how to continue to write!

What is the motivation to write? No matter how I try I can’t put words on why. And when I try it makes no sense…..

Everyone who has tried to write on Internet knows that it takes both time and effort. Most of us need some motivation to put so many hours in a project. Even though it is a "need", we still must produce something over and over again .....

What is the motivation to write? And how do we maintain that motivation? There are probably as many reasons as there are people and I can only write about why I write and my tips on how to keep up motivation in times when the ideas and the words seems to be more or less missing.

Scribbling or masterpiece?
Scribbling or masterpiece? | Source

The motivation to write!

For me there are only one explanation but also several explanations. Because every time I try to define one explanation another explanation arise. And the second is a total contradiction to the first explanation! I will try and explain and I hope it make some sense!

Sometimes I think it is because I see things differently from others and I feel a strong urge to tell others. But at the same time I think that former thought I contradict myself and think: of course I write because I am social creature who needs my “pack” and want to communicate with people who see things the same way as I do. No one wants to be alone in Universe!

Other times I think I am totally magnificent and I am convinced that I can write about almost everything and also do it pretty good. It is like I have a headless hubris and I feel like I am the best! But at the same time I am very humble and feel happiness for other talented writers here. I am so impressed by the magnificent writing of others that I know are so superior compared to my own scribbling.

Now and then I try to be funny, but at the same time I want to be serious and create serious and well research articles. It is like I turn between intelligence and stupidity.

This might sound more like a total confusion but I believe that everyone who writes something, or creates something, goes in and out of these moments.

The only way I can think of will describe it is that the process of writing is like the physical definition of interference, where two totally different waves moves towards each other, meet somewhere in the middle and either makes even or reinforce each other.

Take for example the two contradictions hubris and humbleness; hubris comes from one direction and leaps forward. But from opposite direction comes humbleness with the same force. They meet in the middle and there they can either make even or increase each other to the double effect.

The times when I write something good is the times when I somehow catch the exact moments where reinforcement occurs in my position as a guard in the middle.

The times when I can´t write anything at all, or when everything I write looks and seems totally unnecessary and a waste with everybody's time, is when there is no reinforcement. All the words ends up like nothing no matter how much I write. Nothing happens and the words become a total waste of paper!

Write, write and write some more!
Write, write and write some more! | Source

So, how do we come out of this downturn and the writer's block? How do we catch the moment when the waves reinforce one another and something great is created? And how do we increase those moments?

By writing, and writing more!

The more we write the better we get! Save your writing even if it looks bad for the moment. Some day you will continue that unfinished article and transform it to a masterpiece! You will be at your best and so will everything else!

By reading the work of others!

When we read the work of others we learn and also get inspiration. Maybe not at once, at least if you are in a real period of writers block, but eventually. Everything we read affects us and slowly a creative process starts in the background. Just give it time!

By focusing!

When everything you write looks and sounds like scribbling and nonsense that no one would be interested in, try and stay focused! It is so easy to start writing on several articles or hop between several articles, try one idea after the other until everything in your head is a total mess. You can work like this for a while but not for long, or your inspiration and motivation will be less. If you must write on several articles, decide which articles you will write on and alter between them, When you get stuck on one, turn to the other, and back again if you must. The important thing is to find a way to get out of this phase! Get focused!

Never mind the SEO, tags or keywords!

Most of us are here with the purpose of getting more readers and views. Or maybe we just want to have readers at Hubpages. Otherwise we could just write in a private notebook. And a great way to achieve more readers is to mind and use the keywords that are high ranked in search engines like Google. But when we are in a less creative period the search for good keywords doesn’t going to help at all. Instead it can be a cause for writers block or at least adding to the problem! Write something you know, and are passionate about instead and leave the search-friendly keywords for now. You can always come back and do it later.

By praising you!

When you can´t produce something that others can praise, you must be your own best audience! Praise your own work, praise your self for being you, for everything you do, no matter how tiny and unimportant it may appear to be, and do it repeatedly!

We need eight positive thoughts to compensate for a negative thought, so you better be good at praising yourself! Get your self a notebook and make sure you write down so many good things about your self every evening. You must boost your self-esteem! By writing it down you force your self to think positive thoughts about your self and your brain will be affected. I don’t know how, but it really works!

Publish something!

When we are out of flow we tend to be our worst critic! You cant rely on your own judgement to hundred percent when you are in a critical period so you must let others make the judgement. Test your writing on your friends or publish an article that you are not hundred percent satisfied with! There is a good chance that you will get positive feedback even though it isn’t your best article. At least you will get feedback in this great community! Go back to the hub after a while and if you still don’t like what you wrote, rewrite the article, improve it by adding text, or if nothing helps; un-publish the article! It has served its purpose and helped you out of writers block!

This is my way to get a positive flow when it comes to writing. It would be interesting to know how you do!

You can really write, from nothing to something, and something different.

I enjoy writing, as I learn and discover more as I write. It's therapeutic; it's life fulfilling.

Ingenira, I agree, it is a joy and a constant learning while we write! The good part is that while writing I hope it gets better and better:) Thanks for your kind and encouraging comment, I love to write, but it isn't easy to put words on why and how!

Aye. You've written so well on a writer's triumphs and doubts here Tina. Practice does make better and your tips are spot on. I have learned to listen to the inner voice. The mind may have some topic or story it says do but if the feeling isn't completely sure I hold off for awhile. 90% of the time that intuition or inner voice will soon bring to mind something else that turns out to be the right story to write. Your articles Ms. thoughtforce, have always been top notch reads. For example the ones on the marine/ocean topics are always informative and enjoyable. Wonder if your majestic Viking roots had anything to do with pointing you in that direction? Skoal Tina!

Hi Tina, sometimes it's so easy to write and others it's not, it takes some understanding for sure, I get so frustrated with myself for the doubts I have.

I agree with Alastar your hubs are top notch, especially your last marine/ocean topic, it was so well written and 'polished' best describes it for me, that's what I am striving for and thank you for being an inspiration.

Acaetnna, you are so right, when everything is there, it is pure joy:)) And luckily that is the case most of the time. Everyone needs to find their own way and ideas can be found where one least expect it:)

You always have something nice to say and I am glad to see you!

Hi Alastar! That is a good tips and most of the time we know if something we wrote is possible or suitable to publish. I have so many unfinished stories and half done hubs, but I keep them and wait just as you say. Someday it is possible to find inspiration and do something good with them.

It is good though to know I am not alone in this mixed feelings:))

Thanks Alastar, you are such a kind man! The love for the oceans is probably an inheritance at least from my father and probably from the Vikings too?) I would not feel comfortable if I lived far away from the coast! I don’t need to live close to the water but it has to be on a short distance so I am able to get there easy. Marine geology is a mix of the Earth history, geology and oceanography so I found my passion! Skoal Alastar!

Hi Movie! Yes it is so frustrating when nothing feels to be good enough and other times the words just come by themselves. I love those times, when I get in a "flow" and everything feels like a masterpiece:)) Luckily we all have our own writing style and you and other here have your unique and brilliant way to write. That is the good part, we learn from each other as we go along! Thanks you Movie for your kind words, I will save them in my memory and remember them the next time I get doubts! It means a lot coming from both you and Alastar!

Hi Tina,

I feel the same way a lot of the time - I and am forever "flip-flopping" back and forth, second guessing my writing, sometimes it just flows and other times I'm stuck on one phrase or subject for what seems like eternity. You gave me some great advice here and that's to just go for it and publish anyway - after all, we can always edit later! Constructive critisism always helps me to improve my hubs. You seem to have a very natural talent for writing and I enjoy reading your hubs from start to finish.

Voted up!

Tina, this is a supurb hub. And I just love this part - "Because every time I try to define one explanation another explanation arise. And the second is a total contradiction to the first explanation!" That sure hits home with me.

I needed this motivating push as I'm taking the 30 hubs in 30 days challenge and wondering if I have what it takes to complete this. Thank you so much. I love these kinds of hubs. I think we all need to hear this. So, I voted up! Hugs

Cloverleaf, I am thrilled if I been able to help you on some way! It is good to have sane self-criticism but sometimes we are too hard for our own good:) We need to allow ourselves to have bad periods even though we only should publish great content.

Constructive criticism is always valuable and this community is great on doing that also! You have made such a great start here at hubpages so in my mind you are doing everything just right! Keep on as you are, you seem to have so many ideas and you write hubs that interest many people. Thanks for your heart-warming comment!

Hi Onegoodwomen, it is so nice to see you again!

I am really happy for your visit here, and I hope your return also mean that you will write hubs yourself again because I have missed your wisdom! I hope everything is well with you and I look forward to see you soon!

Why someone writes is completely personal and sometimes political. To me it's my best voice forward. Talking doesn't always work for me but writing mostly does. And I agree that it takes alot of work but the end result is so rewarding. Great hub!

Thank you, Thoughtforce. Needed a kick in the pants this morning before parking myself in front of the terminal, and this was it.

Funny how little victories -- such as publishing something, completing an article, even soldiering through your daily writing goal -- breeds more positive results while a pebble could knock the whole thing off the track. Writing is that sensitive a process.

Voted up & interesting. They really need some feedback for "inspiring."
