HubPages uses a computer algorithm to calculate your Hubscore (that number). It is based on a number of factors, such as: how many questions you post and answer, how popular your hubs are, how many hubs you have written and their score, etc. Sometimes this ranking is bizzare, as inactive users have reported seeing their Hubscore drop when they become active again.
You would have to be fully committed to writing for HubPages to get near 100 (some have that score). Getting to the 90 area is sufficient for the casual writer. People will take your writing more seriously if you have a score around 90.
This has been discussed elsewhere, including perhaps in some Hubs, so I recommend doing a search on HubPages for more information.
I think if you publish way to many hubs in a given time period, without giving the latest ones time to achieve numerical lift off, in terms of numbers of viewers, overall hub score rankings and other methodical calculative scoring factors.
I think your score simply will drop due to the averaging system they have in place, as well as the popularity ranking amongst all your peers within the hub community. Time plays a huge role in this equation as well, but if a person is active enough they may bypass many of their peers as well, no matter the length of time they've been on hubpages.
These factors of ranking formulate into a sort of algorithm that hubpages system factors in over time, and also ranks its users based on hubtivity, or hubpages activity, which can be sensed by seeing your accolades results, once certain communicative & personal challenge levels are achieved.
These above are all the sum of reasons why your overall hub score will go up and down at times. Your hubs overall quality in terms of social ranking amongst the search engines also gets factored in. Basically meaning that the search engines take into consideration the amount of time a viewer of your hub will spend on that particular web page. Once they've determined this timing your hub scores get scored and rated based on its overall quality for content rendering and display.
it seems to be to do with your level of activity on hubpages, coupled with the scores of your hubs
I see that if I am less active in the community by way of asking and ansering to questions the number decreases by about 4 to 5 points. My hub output remains constant throughout.
I was wondering the same thing. I think that if you are linking your articles too soon after publishing them, that might drop your score. I was at a score of 87 a couple days ago, and this morning I got on and it was 78. That is really discouraging.
i think it depends on many factors which i think includes how popular that hub is, the number of comments and people visiting the amount of money you are making etc
It's a total waste of time worrying about that silly little number in the bottom corner of your avatar. It's an outdated, obsolete system that needs to be disposed of by the hub pages. Just have fun!

I got like 10 posts stuck in the mid 70's that I want to get to 80 so I can submit them to networks. What are some surefire ways to increase your score without changing everything? I use the same format on two hubs with similar subjects and one gets 93 and the other gets 77...so frustrating.

I've been here almost 3 yrs and would like an honest evaluation of some of my hubs. I'm concerned about my low hubscore. I continually study hubs at the learning center, participate in forums, comment on hubs, re-title and revise hubs, and have reached over 300,000 page views. I...

hub:/hub/Non-Destructive-TestingJust wondering like if there's anything I can do as a user to "hop" older hubs or something. I often come across hubbers with extremely low hub scores (like 1 or 5) and I was wondering if HubPages has a tool to like find these hubbers and then like manually...

I thought if a hubpage was listed in Google search it was featured. But apparently that is not the truth. I guess I will keep the hubs up and run my own check on them.

I know this kind of questions are very subjective, realizing that I'd still appreciate you throwing out any guesses on my number goal. If my first article scored 84 (my publishing goal is 15), and then received 100 views in about 24 hours..what should my goals be to get to the revenue receiving...
