Is writing on hubpages a good investment?

I have spend several months, weeks, days and hours on the web searching for legit ways to obtain a source of income to put towards my schooling expenses. I would like to hear from those who have earned from hub-pages.

It depends on your definition of good investment. Yes, you can certainly earn money on Hub Pages and yes, it will take you a while, but if you think doing a lot of work up front for a steady pay off over the next several years is worth it, then it's a good investment. If you want immediate fruits for your labors then you are better off trying something else (i.e. a real job!).

There will always be a trade off between work and income. There's no dream job where you do nothing and make millions instantly, so try to find your place somewhere in the middle. If you need money quick, don't rely on Hub Pages. If you are willing to put in a few hours a week and reap benefits in a year, then go for it.

Great answer, sethpowers.  If I were going to give advice to new people that want to make money here, it would be that they learn how to get found on search engines and then go full bore writing on several accounts.

Of course, if you are disciplined and want real money, nothing beats owning your own site. That way you control how many ads are placed and you receive 100% of the income. If your site is somewhat popular you can literally make $1000s a month.

It does take time to build up and you won't earn a high income doing this but you can make enough to live on if you're consistent, disciplined, and write well reasoned, high quality articles with keywords that are popular in Google. Or write sales articles or Amazon. It takes more than a few months.

In your profile, you say HubPages is your hobby.  I have found that if you truly want to be successful in earning strongly here, you have to approach it with the time investment and seriousness of a full-time job.

Knowledge is not of any value unless you share it, thanks for sharing that tip Relache.

If you restrict your investment universe to just writing articles, then probably HP is as good as any. For the time put in to be really successful here, however, I think you'd be better off investing your time into your education. Even if you are super-successful here, you will make less than a college grad in a hi-tech field, and without any benefits that a job could bring. Besides that, your income stream on HP is at risk for the next change in Google's ranking algorithm. Just ask some of the top earners here about that!

Casimiro, you noted "your income stream on HP is at risk for the next change in Google's ranking algorithm." I'd like to know more about this. Can you please explain what this means?
