    Is HubPages dying?

I’m worried about HP. What with outages, delays in processing income and now difficulty getting onto my stats page or my earnings page it might seem the gremlins have gained power at HQ.
Normally I would blame the internet or my computer for pages freezing or coming up half-loaded but frankly every other page, every other site I access springs into fully-fledge life immediately.
Please say you are having similar problems with HP.

Yes Angie, I agree.  There appears to be something almost sinister happening and yet I can't seem to be able to 'put my finger on it', as to just what or why it is happening.  Thank you for noticing the 'odd behavior' also.  I was beginning to think it was just me again...

It’s intermittent, samsons … that way they make us think it’s us and not them smile

Judging from the past few weeks, it would seem so. First the site was down, then traffic took a beating because of a google update and now seems like pinterest has labeled hubpages a spam site! Not sure what else is left.

Cripes … things must be bad when Pinterest thinks HP is a spam site. It must be because of all the ‘shares’ we are urged to do. When you get so many people at it it must look like something dodgy!

I just pinned a hub yesterday, it went fine. So that's not a universal thing.

I've been noticing all of the same issues. I've only been with HP since July, so I have to say that my overall impression of the site isn't very good in terms of earning money - although the community of people who write here are awesome.

I've also noticed that CPM is down, along with pageviews. Seems the outage happened around the time that my traffic started to die. The other day my traffic was down so much that I wondered if HP would ever recover; now it's back up, but only a little, no where near where it was before the most recent Google update.

Seems that the "idle hubs" policy here at HP isn't helping, and Google still doesn't think much of the content published here. It's a shame.

I think you have put the whole thing comprehensively in a nutshell here, FR. Maybe HP’s wonderful open-handed policy of 'come one, come all' in terms of writers and their writing may well have jeopardised its position with the big G.

Angie - I believe it has. When I signed up for HP, I was surprised that I wasn't required to submit a writing sample, or some sort of application before being allowed to publish.

Unfortunately there are too many mediocre writers scribbling loads of trite pap  and never reading others' comments. There are only there hubbers who even answer comments on their questions - Mary Goldffleisch, Kallini2010 and you, Angie.

I was thinking of flying in the face of danger AND good taste, by writing a really naughty hub with lots of rude words and stuff - just to see if anyone noticed. But I think Flanders & Swann covered it with:
      "Ma's out, Pa's ,
      Let's talk rude,
      Pee

My dear Ian - the majority will always be mediocre and I do belong in the majority, yet for those who write consistently and with the good feedback - they always have a chance to improve!  Without HP, I would not have met YOU!

You might be onto something Angie. Most have us have noticed something going on. Now with Pinterest banning HubPages...that's not a good sign at all. Good luck to all! smile

Hmm, perhaps it is just HP staff doing tweaks?

After 5.5 years on HubPages, the site is still working well for me. My number of views decrease only about 2% on Saturday and usually recover on Sunday. Earnings are steady, with a bit of fluctuation. I also am having no problems with Pinterest, pages load fine, etc. and hope this good result continues! I am sorry you all are having problems!

Hi Patty … as I say the problem is intermittent - probably when HP staff are doing some tweaking. The Pinterest thing is a problem however but Simone is on their tail so things may soon be sorted. Fingers crossed!

I wasn't working much in August and September. My income dropped significantly those months. The idle thing messed me up significantly, Yesterday a lovely hubber posted the link to the idle page on the learning center, which made everything clear.    Everything seemed to come into focus after reading this link.

I don’t have a lot of problems with idling … but strangely the odd behaviour does seem to have coincided with the new aspect.

Hey, please tell me it's a phase we're going through. I like it here. I think I'm either too green or just optimistic about what's happening and what's to come. I will admit though, that I've been feeling a little disconnected from interacting at the level I was when I started here 6 weeks ago. Seems that people aren't commenting as much but my views are steady. Let's think positive. PEACE!!

I'm with you Janshares, I really like it here and am trying to remain upbeat even though the dramatic decline in traffic and earnings is soooo discouraging. I'm having a hard time writing. My hearts not in it. So I appreciate your positivity.

I’m sure the decline in traffic is due to Google having done a small algorithm tweak (all info on a forum thread) - we’ve just got to sit tight until it stabilises. I think we can be sure that HP staff are doing all they can to rectify things for us

Hi Angie:  I definitely see problems here.  I was really going good in July with money pageviews, etc...then on Aug 20 the bottom fell out...views dropped and money dropped dramatically...and although there has been some slight recovery, things have not improved much.  I definitely feel there are too many people writing here whose work is substandard, and I think this really is hurting us.  Neither does it help that the forums have become so hate filled and controversial.  I'm noticing too that people are not writing as much, and what many are writing I really don't want to read.  Too much blogging is hurting, also.  Until HP addresses these issues, we all will get hurt.  Those who have been here for many years are established and most continue to do well, but the rest of us do not have those laurels upon which to rest.  It is a sad situation that I hope will improve soon as I love it here.
