   You have a Referral tracker already that is attached to each of your Hubs and is used for tracking your "hits" or "reads"., etc.
   What I use them for is keeping up with how active my different categories of Hubs are. Say you write Hubs on three major categories, Recipes, History and Miscellaneous.
   If you generate a unique tracker for your recipe hubs, and another for your History Hubs and tag them with the appropriate tracker code, you can use the data and track how much "action" you are getting in each category, while, of course, all of your earnings stay the same.

      I'm so glad you asked this question xanzacow, because I don't have a clue and I'm looking forward to reading others' answers to improve my knowledge.  I know I don't get enough out of my hubs as I could use all the technical 'stuff' to more advantage

   The procedures for Referral Trackers are much to involved to present in this forum.  I know you are not supposed to promote your own hub pages.  But I have a hub page that explains everything you want to know about referral trackers but were afraid to ask.  Here is the link.  I hope this helps

   I just discovered mine recently and there is a lot that this tracker does but I use mine to refer others to Hubpages. So suppose I throw my referral tracker code out at my Facebook page and someone clicks it, then they decide to join Hubpages and write hubs, then I am supposed to receive 10 percent of their future earnings.
   Like I said, there is many more things this referral tracker code does, but this is what I'm most interested in. Great question.

   The original intent of the referral tracker is to give you credit for anyone who comes to HP via your subdomain. If they sign up to HP, then you get 10% of whatever they earn on HP (from the HP 40%, not your side, so you lose nothing). This is why the referral trackers are under the Earnings tab.
   
   I have used them for that, but mainly I use referral trackers to see where hits are coming from. It helps me gauge which social media work best for driving traffic to my hubs. I create a referral tracker with a meaningful name, such as "FBPosts", go to the bottom of the hub I'm promoting and click on "link to this page". You'll get a popup that has the list of referral trackers. Choose one and it is automatically inserted into the URL. Copy/paste and voilá! Anyone who comes to your hub via that URL will get counted under that referral tracker.
   
   My own opinion is that this method of tracking is much more useful than trying to track actual referrals for HP sign-ups. Thus, Referral Trackers menu item is more suited to be under the Hubs tab in your account dashboard where Traffic Sources already is.

   A referral tracker basically is a tracker added to an URL that allows HubPages to determine that you referred someone to the site. If that person becomes a writer and earns revenue, you will receive 10% of the ad revenue they earn taken from HubPages' 40% (so the writer still receives 60%, HubPages only 30% and you get 10%). For details on how to add them to URLs, go to hubpages.com/learningcenter/referral-program. It is a great way to make a little extra revenue.

   Usually the site I want to add a link to won't work when I tack on the extra code to the HubPages link. So I stopped trying to use it.

It is placed inside a link and when someone clicks on the link and then signs up for Hubpages, you are given credit for a portion of the ad impressions that the person generates from hubs that they write. Think of it as a sort of affiliate program: if you get people to come to Hubpages through your link containing an affiliate tracker you will get extra page impressions, which translates into more money for you from ad revenues.

    You will note that Don (a hubber who has provided a good answer for you) explains how a referral tracker can be used to good advantage. I cannot add anything to his very good answer. However, I will admit that I have not used trackers to my advantage. For example, I have written hubs that have been read by hundreds of readers while I have written other hubs that have not been widely read or enjoyed by many. Why is this? I do not know. However, by taking advantage of trackers I could focus my time on writing hubs that will be read and enjoyed by more people.
