I understand what you are suggesting, but to make such a change at this point--this system has been in place for hundreds of thousands of users over a 6 year period--would be extremely difficult. So much in our system pulls from this username.
In the meantime, perhaps we can make it more clear during sign up that the username you choose is your "brand" or pen name that others on HubPages will see you as.
