Is there a topic or theme that would really spark your interest?
I like reading the type of articles that don't make it to google. My favorites are the travel reviews by people who went to various places. On the search engines, these are totally invisible because there is such a huge advertising push from these places to keep only their "legitimate" reviews and booking sites on the first pages. So you can't get the "real story" anywhere else!
So that is what I most often read on Hubpages.
I notice and read articles with quirky titles, which intrigue me so I want to find out more. Since quirky titles are not liked by SEO, I tend to notice very few articles on HP.
