I hate having my name appear in the URL for instance:
    http://claireroach.hubpages.com/hub/Sho … ins-online

Would be so much 'cleaner' is it were:
Plus I wouldn't feel so spammy when I drop a cheeky link in places.

Authors subdomains are used so that a user can establish an online brand and market their content.
Currently, if your Hub has been selected as an Editor's Choice Hub, then the URL will show as http://www.hubpages.com/Shopping-for-bargains-online

Please also be aware that that URL resolved as well even if it is not EC.

      So this URL
      hubpages.com/hub/Shopping-for-bargains-online

      actually does currently resolve to
      http://claireroach.hubpages.com/hub/Sho … ins-online

You can always use the shortened URL when dropping links:
Hub > Stats > Hub Metrics > there you will see the short URL looking something like this: http: // hub. me/aeymv (I put spaces in between to kill the link)

Some places do not allow link shorteners because they can be use to hide "bad" urls or an affiliate link

Yeah, I never use shortened links, they just scream spam to me.
