Are white spaces a problem in Hubs?

I've read in the forums before that writers should get rid of any white/empty spaces in Hubs and that this will help get traffic, make it look good for Google. At least that's how I remember the logic going. Is this true and, if it is, why?

I have always automatically thought that blank space was tacky; and always got rid of it. Kind of an innate aesthetics thing if you ask me.

I think they're tacky too. I've gone on a campaign to purge them from my older Hubs that I wrote when I didn't have a clue and had blank spaces accidentally in there. I definitely would rather have the Hubs look good than have ugly empty spaces in them.

I removed white/blank space as well, courtesy of the WryLilt forum last year on fixing your hubs. It certainly made a huge difference.
