Have you joined the Amazon Associates program and pasted your Amazon ID into HubPages?

when I click to "get started" under the amazon program it says that i need to associate a google adsense account.  Thats where  am getting confused.

You're sure there isn't a sentence underneath that which says you can "configure an external Amazon account"?

from what I have read it seems like there should be another option under external.

What happens when you click the green button next to Amazon?   You should get an option to join the  HP Amazon program, plus a sentence linking to the external option.

      Try this:

Thanks that let me put my ID in but now the external affiliate through amazon is active but next to the amazon program  it says "Not Active (but  your external code____ is  active)"  what do I have to do to correct this .    When i click the green button next to amazon program it shows one incomplete task  "associate a google adsense account."  Is this odd?

A valid AdSense account is necessary for most of the earning opportunities on HubPages. This table does a good job of explaining the requirements for each.

Matt, before the launch of the HubPages Amazon program, you could use your own external Amazon account in capsules and still earn money.

Are you saying that new members can't do that now??

If you are lucky enough to have a valid Amazon account that was created more than 90 days ago, then you should be able to use it if you opt out of the HubPages Amazon program.

Many people will choose to use the HubPages program as it gives an opportunity for most people to earn at a higher Amazon tier.

I agree - but if someone doesn't have an Adsense account, then using the external Amazon account is their only option.

I don't get the bit about 90 days?  If someone joins Amazon to use the account on HubPages, then waits 90 days, they'll lose the account for lack of sales!

If you have an individual Amazon affiliate account then, yes, you can use it.

I agree, a person with a new Amazon account might have it lapse before they made a sale if they choose to not use the HubPages program.

I wanted to make sure that people who read this thread later know about the payment tier difference offered by the HubPages program as that is what primarily differentiates the two options.

I'm on the HP Amazon program myself for that reason.

It's a good point about the 90 day requirement.   Some of the posters asking about an external account are doing so because they can't qualify for Adsense yet, so they want to use Amazon to make a bit of money in the meantime.  In practice, though, that's probably a bad time to initiate a personal Amazon account because brand new Hubs take time to get traffic, so sales in the first few months are likely to be very low or non-existent.  I must remember to give that warning next time a newbie asks!
