As we know, Google only allows 3 ads for those using straight AdSense in place of the HP Ad program. How about using the 300x1050 Portrait format for the single right sidebar ad? Google sometimes places up to 5 ads in that single puppy, all of it perfectly AdSense legal!
I'm already using it on my main website. If this is actually a terrible idea, please let me know so I can toss it out of there!
Seriously, if it is a bad idea; I need to know. Obviously it is important to me. Thanks.
I realize this is a Saturday night. I'll bump this during the work week to be sure The Powers That Be see it.
We spoke about this in our meeting yesterday.
The 300x250 is the best performing and most used size and using that larger size ad would eliminate the opportunity for many at that size.
Thank you, Matthew. If I understand your post correctly, there are a couple points...
A. When we individual users use straight AdSense, only one ad is allowed there in any case. So using the 300x1050 Portrait format will not displace those other ads since they would not be allowed there to begin with.
B. Google apparently totally agrees with you the 300x250 is the best performing and most used size. That is exactly what they fit in the 300x1050 spot more often than not (sometimes even more than one which lets us get around the one-ad limit for the right sidebar). It is only when the other ad sizes bid more is when those other ad sizes are put in there instead. Best of both worlds?
Thanks again for your reply.
Well the chaos around here seems less than usual this morning, so I figure this is as good a time as any to do the promised bump-o-gram.
For what it's worth, the new ad format does seem to be working for me on my website. Kind of hard to really tell though, what with the statistical sampling being kind of small. Haven't seen google do the 5-ad bonanza thing again; but the long, single ads they are using definitely seem better than the boxes.
Meanwhile, Happy Wednesday! Things could be worse.
