Not to interrupt the flow ladies but just wanted to say to paradigmsearch that it's nice to see some familiar names since I've been back...so many people I used to follow are gone with the wind! Been trying today to acclimate to the changes implemented the past two years and of course to catch up on the bitching! Have a good holiday to you both and I'm looking forward to reading your new hubs.

Anyway, thanks for the inspiration to finish that "s" hub.

( However, I hate I how it turned out. I am not a writer. It was way hard and I hope to never write another hub for the rest of my life.)

Yes, they sure do eat rats, and mice.    I buy them frozen from the pets warehouse.
It's illegal to live feed here, and I wouldn't do it anyway.

Would love a pet rat, but it wouldn't work with the cat and the
              snakes.  :-(

Is that ban on live feeding for all of Australia or just the city you are in?
I have a Tegu but do not have a snake because of the problem obtaining mice where I live. The Tegu eats anything (unhatched eggs from my incubator, lunchmeat, some fruit, and the occassional keet-guinea chick-that hatches deformed). My geese cannot tell the difference since he has a long tail and flicks his tongue but if he was a snake he would go hungry a lot.

Love the tegu flicking his tongue!

I know in my state, Victoria, live feeding is illegal, but for some strange reason it is not enforceable by law.   Not sure about the other states, but it probably isn't recommended.

If you start the reptile on defrosted food when they are young, they have no problems eating it.

DrMark1961posted 8 years agoin reply to this

"Not enforceable" sounds like Brasil. We have a socialist government and they pass hundreds of new laws every session of congress, thinking they are making our lives better. No one ever enforces anything though.
I had snakes in college and fed frozen mice, which I could get free from the labs. No sources here though, which is why my Tegu is so great. (He will even share a papaya with my parrots if nothing else is available.)
Not sure about his religion. He won´t eat shellfish either, which is kind of weird.

    Here is my lizard.
He is legless and lives outside under a hibiscus bush. He eats whatever he wants.
I found him the other day.
I may never see him again.
