I recently wrote an article which was published, quite in-depth with images and without links, an now it's Unpublished.
Am I missing something here? Do I need to edit it further, make correction or leave it and write another hub?
Published means, was it approved and featured? Normally when we write an article and submit it, it got published at first. You can see that on the Account page. Then, later it gets approved by the Hub page team and based on their assessment either it gets published or withdrawn.
Also, you can check your inbox to know the exact reason of that. They normally send emails for every action related to your hubs.
