Pinging to my understanding is sending one of the blog listing services a packet
like your a URL (Universal Resource Locater) telling them Hey I am here and I updated my blog.

    Heres one explanation

    http://pingoat.com/goat/ping

I am guessing you want to learn about blog pinging But heres the definition of how we used to use pininging

Ping is a basic Internet program that allows a user to verify that a particular IP address exists and can accept requests. The verb ping means the act of using the ping utility or command. Ping is used diagnostically to ensure that a host computer you are trying to reach is actually operating.

I don't think you need to worry about pinging. It's just a message to a service to come look for new content. Hubpages gets crawled at least daily, so any new content will be found automatically.

Mark is more than likely correct

Google does visit hubpages several times a day. At the moment

Maybe because everyone is pinging their hubs???

It's still usefull if you want to be referenced by the blog services not just google as far as I can understand.

It's google blogger, so they probably do the same thing, I don't know, what do you think Mark?

As far as I know, you cannot ping yourself from hubpages, but I am open to correction.

I just assumed you were asking about hubpages, rather than something else but I would think your blog will get crawled also. I'm afraid I know nothing about ping software for blogger sites. WordPress , I can point you at some software.

I don't believe your hubs need to be pinged.  As for your blog, if you would like your info out to other services ASAP, i.e. Technorati, etc., then you can have your blog pinged by those services.  Listing on those services will get your blog pinged periodically anyway, but you can hurry them along if you like.

You can also use a service like Feedburner which does most of that work for you.  Blogger blogs do not need to be pinged by Google, as they will be indexed by Google eventually, but you can have other services ping them.  I think a big key is patience.  You want to get listed everywhere and let all of the services know you are out there, but then it just takes time to develop a readership.  I think you will find that it grows steadily, slowly at first, but steadily.  I hope this helps.
