I have come to the conclusion, that whatever rating system hubpages is using to rate hubs, it must be designed to baffle, irritate, befuddle, perplex, confuse, aggravate, outrage, annoy, offend, and torment.
The ratings system is actually rather easy to understand. Hub authors who achieve a balance of having quality content that's original, a decent flow of traffic, and whose visitors find the Hubs useful and thus interact with the various features get higher scores which will fluctuate across a moderate range as the different factors change.
If HubPages disclosed what they actually do, spammers would just game the system and then everyone would feel like you've chosen to feel.
I agree with relache! This mystery keeps us going and inspires us to produce consistent quality of work!
That sounds insightful to me. I'm still in the mindset of using HubPages only as an alternative to Ezine Articles where you post and forget.

If updating a hub that is featured, say your best hub, a Hub-of-the-Day hub, a contest winner, or such, puts it into a no-index state until it's reviewed again, why would one want to ever update it?I have such a hub...

I thought if a hubpage was listed in Google search it was featured. But apparently that is not the truth. I guess I will keep the hubs up and run my own check on them.
