I've spent two days following their instructions and have come up with zero effective keywords. Has anyone found the keyword academy useful or are they just another scam?

They are not a scam. Their techniques work just fine.

This is a six year old thread. Why not start a new one of your own next time?

Meanwhile there are plenty of good hubs written about optimising articles for SEO.

I've seen some videos by Court but haven't signed up or followed whatever lessons they have, but they're not a scam.

Perhaps try it this way: choose a topic that you LOVE. Something that interests you. And then use the keyword research techniques to find the right balance between Average CPC and search volume and use that information to find the most profitable way you can write about the subject using those keywords in your URL, title, capsule headings and tags.
