Well I just don't think that the 70,000 odd membership is made out of Alter Egos, only a few of us have them. I think people only bother if topic is interesting. So the first pages of Forum ads probably isn't grabbing them. Lets Hot it up with some exciting NEW Topics.
i didnt really knaw through the staps wouldn't waste my time - but I do like to have fun in the forums so when- I seen a bunch of nonsense going on so , Ijust didn't get involved - started my own threads - ignored the garbage and went on -
Mate, I wish i have all the time in the world so i can spend some more time here. But like everybody else, my schedule is so tight!!! I forgot to change my avatar but I will. I chose the pirate just for you by the way...

I'm lucky, for I have an ability to not change, the everlasting evergreen color of the pines in Maine, god thanks for the gift of solitude as the masses extinguish themselves for months on end, only to outshine the possibilities I had during the time of loneliness and famine as I struggled to survive the test - they all just slept there waiting to strike, as in the fall they will be what the picture books and photographers playground reminisce it will happen once again.
It means I don't go nowhere, and if im not here im busy.
Forums are kinda like bars ... You have your forum flies that will always be around, your current regulars who will be around a lot for many months and then disappear, and then you have your dramatic flies that come and go ... each time returning to see what they missed while they were gone.
The only difference ... no alcohol to be had ... unless you keep a bottle of vodka under the desk, like I do.
...You wrote a Hub about Disney Vacation Packages. You downed like 3 bottles and needed some more money so you looked though your mail, found the Disney DVD, watched it, and then wrote a Hub about it as you were halfway falling out of your chair!
you know, I think it comes and goes. A crop of hubbers will be around a while, be active, maybe cause some controversy. Ususally end up being fairly popular quickly, then they leave for whatever reason.
Eventually, someone takes their place and it all starts all over again
The only forums I'm really familiar with are this one and one other one on a writing site. I watched that one go from active and vibrant to pretty much dead (with - like - most recent posts in specific categories dating back months), after administrators started laying down the law over one thing or another. Besides laying down any number of laws, they started to point out that the individual categories were supposed to facilitate writing, rather than just being discussions. They have separate categories for each religion, as well as for each political leaning (just to make sure nobody with "different thinking" creates any problems for anyone else ). There's even a separate category just for fights. The large part of any chaos has been eliminated, but so has participation. If the chaos/soap operas remain, the "grown-ups" (and I don't mean "all-serious grown-ups" who don't enjoy a laugh - just the "regular" people who aren't all into creating soap operas on here) are driven away. If the "grown-ups" participated and just ignored the chaos-lovers eventually the nature of the forums would change; but few grown-ups think it's worth "fighting over territory" on an online forum.
I guess the answer is that people either have to overlook what they see as "foolishness" or "chaos" and hang around; or else bail and leave the forums to the chaos-lovers, who then can have a high old time for themselves. I used to come here with the expectation of discussion, debate or a few laughs. These days I stop by out of curiosity about the latest soap opera. I can feel that novel curiosity wearing off with time, though.
What you say is very true, Lisa. It also might be added that I think management got a little over-zealous in their approach in banning people. It borders on censorship. It also has to do with wanting a specific formula put in place without having to do the actual work of monitoring, which takes a keen eye. I feel the new rules are not likely work, especially with the worst offenders.
Many other sites have volunteer moderators who are familiar with each forum and the regulars there specifically. It would be easy and probably beneficial to audition volunteers so that they could eliminate trolls, etc. and actually do the job that needs to be done.
As it is, what they are doing is similar to banning 'bad' books from a library due to popular complaint.

Yet again I see some emotive posts because someone has been "banned".Too many Hubbers seem to assume the statement ".... is banned" means they've been banished from HubPages forever, whereas in fact...
