Sensuality Versus Erotica?

  1. Cagsil profile image59
    Cagsilposted 7 years ago

    Hey Hubbers,

    Let's talk about it.

When it comes to writing...can the sensuality of the context of the words, drive one into an Erotic frenzy.

Can and when does it become no longer for public view?

Can a story be told, which is sensual never meet erotica standards?

Please feel free to give your thoughts.

There are plenty of books classified as erotica so I don't agree with that suggestion.  Both words are so subjective, I don't think you can set a boundary.

I enjoy writing the senusal and right when it is about to cross over to erotica I end it. I only write these kind of stories, or scenes really, for my hubby though. And occasionally when someone asks and give me two names I might write one. I actually did one because a friend wanted to give it to her boyfriend. big_smile

It's all in the mind of the beholder! However, Hubpages does have a TOS and criteria for making a judgement for material they deem inappropriate.

    1. Cagsil profile image59
Cagsilposted 7 years ago in reply to this

HubPages TOS is irrelevant here, because I want people's opinions on when sensuality in writing, becomes erotica?

Can a story include fondling of woman's breast? Is that considered Erotica? or is just Sensuality?

      Do you see my point?

that would be sensual now if it led to him sucking and groping harder that would be stepping a bit more into Erotica in my opinion smile

I'm not trying to get anyone banned. I'm trying to make sure, if I decide to write a story, of a sensual nature- I want to know how far I can push the envelope, before....people in general get offended.

I don't want to post a Hub and have it flagged, that serves no purpose.

Obviously you haven't read any of the stuff I've written and/or you have even visited my photo hubs, which would give you an idea of the women I like.

If you can't understand "HOW" I could be capable, then I would have to say that you don't have all the facts and you are jumping to an assumption.

If you feel your assumption is better than having all the facts. Then, one might want to consider- What does that make you? Hmm....

                  Just a thought.

You do not simply edit and republish. You must submit to HubPages before you can republish.

This would be a waste of time. Would it not?

Hi Cags, I write erotica in eBook format, there is a fine line between the sensual and erotic writing. Erotica uses harsh wording and is very ... describing. You could say "fondle a woman's breast" as the words "breast" and "fondle" are what would be called soft words. However, relating to a specific portion of a woman's breast would be crossing over to erotica. Furthering that, you couldn't discuss any, ummm ... private areas entering others without it getting erotic. Mouth on mouth is fine, but mouth on other areas ... not so much. Does this help? And have you read erotica? That may help you see what crossing the line is like!

You have a great question there - so subjective to answer! I have often wondered about this very thing.  And I agree that sensuality gets you interested but erotica turns you on!  They serve different purposes - some great literature like Joseph Conrad, Dylan Thomas etc use very sensual descriptive writing to further their stories but it doesn't turn you on that much, just makes it more real.  The writing I've read labeled erotica goes much further and seems to start off with the purpose of arousing the reader.  Exactly what will arouse in particular reader on any particular day is a wide range of action, description and fun.  I think a great homework assignment is to locate some published writing that is labeled erotica and read to compare what you are writing.  In fact, I will have to do this, just to refresh my memory, of course. smile

that hairy shoe has me all jumpy feeling - remember Tarantula - that old b&w movie with the huge tarantula?  that's what that shoe reminds me of - and it was the scariest thing I'd seen when I was 9 or so.  Very subjective - case in point - to me nothing sensual about that shoe.  But then, super high heels don't turn me on - and who cares!

Sometimes Cagsil, I have great moments of insight and if you are lucky you will get to witness more! Most of the time, I'm just kinda silly and weird though, and I have a lot of fun here at HubPages, I hope none of it changes, even the religion and politics forums. big_smile:

Here's a question that I have. To what extent can we post sexualy oriented hubs? For example, can we write on "Winter Sex," or "Hot Coco and Hot Sex?" The content would include pictures of holiday lingerie, tips (along with pics) on how to 'warm your partner up' on the winter nights. Also, sexual positions, best places to have intercourse.

This is a legit question because I was thinking of certain titles dealing with erotic subjects. And not to highlight some of the gorgeous profile pics around, but the pictures in these hubs would be about the same nature as far as body exposure.

    two cents anyone?

I say do what you want and learn that way - at least your expressing yourself - and I say that's what Hubs is for if I can do hubs on female orgasms, penile fractures and making love in the rain in a populated area, I say go for it - I do, every time, with some slight discretion I may add, but not much - and they are the highest viewed hubs to date -so you just never know big_smile  Cheers!

yeaaa, because I've been on a dry spell this last month, but I've always wanted to write erotica stories but it may offend although my content is never vulgar. I wrote one hub scratching the surface and it got good reviews but I don't want to be viewed....well, anyway, I'll take your advice. Thanks.

HubPages (and all of us) rely on Adsense to earn money. Adsense is a prude. They don't allow adult content.  It would be silly to jeopardize all our earnings by breaking that rule!

How Google interprets the rule is interpreted leads to all kinds of silly results.  I've seen serious discussions of sexuality get into trouble, whereas pictures of half-naked women seem to be OK.  They use automated scans so the mere mention of words related to sex is enough to cause trouble. Bottom line, erotic Hubs won't work.

think of it this way, would you say Henry Miller's writing is sensual, or erotic?

  25. Cagsil profile image59
    Cagsilposted 7 years ago

Yeah, like tying you to the headboard of a bed with silk ties.....and caressing your entire body, so you have to feel all the tingling sensations run through every inch of your body.

Make sure you are no longer wearing that sweater and touch in places where all your arousal senses become heightened.

Just gentle touch your skin in the softest way so the hair on your arms and legs stands up and you get a chill up your spine.

Just let it entice you until you can't take anymore.

What is the above? Sensual or Erotica?

    1. adamareangere profile image79
adamareangereposted 7 years ago in reply to this

Nice Cagsil, but certainly not erotic, definitely hit the mark on sensual though! Give erotic writing a whirl, see where it takes you...though not on Hubs. :-) We don't want you getting in trouble! If you want I would be more than happy to help you with that (if you want to take it seriously) via email and maybe lead you in the right direction towards publishers if you want to get really serious about giving erotica a go! We need more male writers in the genre!

    Marissa,

It was ME who posed the question. I was thinking of writing a piece, but I wanted to know where to draw the line, between sensuality and erotica.

Many people were helpful. I'm not asking for your approval, for the simple fact that I don't need to. But, do value everyone's opinion on the topic.

    1. Marisa Wright profile image94
Marisa Wrightposted 7 years ago in reply to this

Cagsil, sometimes I wonder if we speak the same language because we often seem to misunderstand each other!

I deliberately didn't reply to your original question because I couldn't give a definitive answer.  I did, however, feel strongly that saying erotica had to be visual was wrong, so I commented on that.  I also specifically answered R Edwards question about what is permitted on HubPages.

I just re-read my posts and can't see anything suggesting I was giving or denying you approval for anything.  My main point was that if you post something Adsense disapproves of, you jeopardize your and everyone else's HubPages earnings - so although we may strongly disagree with their definition of "adult content", we have to live by those rules.
