I don't think this is correct. Shouldn't I have put just pub-xxxx?
I emailed support but as yet havent heard back, nor has it changed.

Either should work. I'd suggest setting up a URL channel for hubpages.com in your adsense account. If you see impressions for that channel, then you can be sure that it is working.
