There are some irritating entities in the forums who seem to get into good threads trying to start pointless arguments with pointless questions or are just plain rude for no reason. I have seen reference to trolls and sock puppets - I think I have got troll but can someone explain it all for me.
Also what happens when someone gets banned, can they get back here etc etc.
How and where do you report abuse if you think it is happening?
You can write to email@example.com for help and clarification.
In addition, trolls sometimes post negative comments on Hub comments sections with a spam link atttached to their screen names in order to pull traffic to their own sites. Trolling takes a lot of forms, some for money I think! lol
I'm not sure whether they ban by email, IP address or what around here, but either one is easy to get around for someone who knows what they're doing. It's up to the community to alert the moderators when something inappropriate or fishy is going on.
trolls and sockpuppets are the scourge of the internet. obviously banning doesn't work. they are very clever and unfortunately, technically adept. they are just a fact of life in virtual worlds. you can ignore them, or report them. sometimes i deal with them, but you have to pick your battles because when it's all said and done, they're not worth the aggravation.
a troll is someone who simply signs up for no purpose than to irritate others, destroy their work ( if possible ) and to spread spam and possibly viruses.. Simply hit that report button if you see them on forums, if not, please e-mail the Hubpages team to report their misconduct.
I hope this helps, and I will only speak for me as I will not judge or call out others.
I just recently was called a forum Troll, meaning I would (TERM) Hijack threads. That I was continually posting messages that had nothing to do with the topic of that thread and irritated many people.
I have been banned, but I will tell you, deservingly so. I repeatedly went after another hubber with a personal attack, not cool. The details causing me to do this are irrelevant. Anyways I was banned for three days-meaning you can not post and yes, when it is lifted HP staff let you know and you may return. First ban 3 days, second 7 days, third, 30 days, 4th for ever. But I just saw one person get to come back and their ban was lifted. So it depends on the individual, their motives, if any and disruption to other hubbers trying to have a conversation.
I hope that helps some and Patty actually put it in much clearer, shorter way ha
no, its for real, a whole clang do no appreciate my behavior here, so immediately, i cleaned up my act, changed my address and deodorant, got new plates on my car, ate a huge lunch and came here golfing, all the same. fuck me man where's the recess monitor, these are dangerous grounds and someone could fall off the monkey bar i tell ya.
Thanks hon, but there is a group that do oh well cest tu.
Now sock puppets, and hopefully someone will confirm or correct me on this, are also known as alter-ego's, other identities people create to write under a different name, maybe even for the privacy or writing a different style. I am not afraid to tell you I gave 3 alter ego-s all which are a very different part of me. I do enjoy the privacy and non-judgmental opinions they give me.
china I hope Im right about sock puppets being alter egos. someone will clarify either way
and china, you can drop in on me anytime too, thank you
and these sock puppets often have conversations with themselves, meaning one person is talking to himself, or arguing, flirting with himself! it's quite easy to spot as you will often see them following each other into threads.
trolls, just don't feed them, they hate being ignored.
their motivation? they have a really sad existence, most live under bridges...
Lot to say about them. Some people did mistake out of fun, some did that just out of their personality and those people learned here not to repeat this again(so far so good). But there are many out there still and we can still find out a lot of about those buggers. More we know less we know.
It can be easy to make the first mistake when funny things pop to mind when answering or somebody says something that just invites a humorous response - problem is you don't always know whether you are among friends or what. You can't see if an avatar has a teenie weeny - or super-fragile ego, or is a kid even ??
that only makes it more interesting! - challenging sometimes, but interesting. I regret that many do not know how, or are afraid to make a direct response without being offensive in one way or another. But I really have a huge aversion to the Miss Manners approach to interaction in the threads - its complicated.
And My point is do you want to see each profile hitting the point of teeny-weeny ? Just keep on reading responses, it's easy to find that out who is running on line of sarcasm, offense, fun, argument, inquiry etc. If we start finding fault in every member posts we might end up being paranoid, there are just patterns we can see on forums that will help to find out those people.
sock puppet doesn't have to be alter egos or anonymous account. Many hubber here have anonymous name including me. Sock puppet motives/definition is quite cleared here in this thread by sunforged. Alter-egos is not got into trolling then they hardly qualify for sock puppets.
This is all true but not all there is to it. Most do it just to make fun of the replies they get. They do it for lulz, which is for laughs. They will purposely post soemthing to provoke a certain response and laught about it along with all their buddies.
I remember participating in some thread hijacks and it was lots of fun. Some threads really deserve hijacking, when you have nothing better to spend 5 minutes on. Sometimes, the subject and/or replies are so dumb, you can but have a good laugh about, as if they were started only for that purpose.
'Tis true - sometimes threads are prime for hijacking, usually the really blatant spam or sockpuppet ones.
Some threads meander - you might get a few folks going at it hammer and tongs in the religion or politics sections. Eventually, things calm down and the thread calms down into a nice chat about random things. Of course, the next shift arrives and the gladiatorial battles recommence.
That's why I like the HP forums - they often have a nice 'ebb and flow.'
Yeah, but people shouldn't mistake 'opinionated ones' as trolls, as there is a big difference. I've wondered this before, as I occasionally have a fetish for contesting individuals for their true opinion on matters, but, at times, it gets mistaken for being "trollish" of some sorts and if that was an actual word, I could understand this feverish fear of trolls. LOL!
Not really - you are clearly doing what you do and that is ok because you have the right to say what you like. stretching an argument to breaking point requires the opposition to stay and willingly argue with you. And just because I am being nice to you doesn;t mean I think your girlfriend in your pic isn't still ugly as **ck !
You are so right. In my profile I state that I am blunt and honest but I'm never against people..just ideologies. If someone attacks me, they can count on me being that blunt person. That doesn't make me anything else.
An alternate character/profile/avatar used by one in order to create false support for an idea or statement.
Sock Puppets are frequently used by Marketers- One account will open a thread with a question.
Than another account usually brand new or lacking post history will arrive and post the answer with a link or suggestion they will make money from.
Occasionally the two accounts will talk back and forth in order to stay on top with the other fresh threads
here at hubpages, the term is often used to describe those who change their account in order to insult and or troll against others in the forum ..but that in fact is more accurately described as being "two-faced" or in schoolyard slang "a spineless pussy"
Now I understand. I had someone call me a sock puppet and called me someone like TK. I have one identity..me Deborah and have no other accounts. It is really irritating when someone says you are not who you really are and vice versa. I am not the type to hide my identity so that I can say something. If I have something to say..I say it.
but are you a marketer? I don't think you are, but if you are, it would be nice to know - I know a couple other people in the forums are marketers - and I still don't understand how harassing people on the threads would help market anything, but I have a lot to learn!
I don't actually care much about the sockpoopers and the trollbuggers, or how to combat, etc. but I keep finding myself sucked into these constant threads about them! Is this, or is it not, a prime example of mind-control attempts - and don't say I'm just paranoid! even tho this is possible. From other of your posts online, Deb, I see that you are interested in this very subject, which could make me paranoid, but I won't allow that to happen. today. anymore.
A good indicator that I've noticed thus far, is that the forum trolls often have an enormous amount of forum posts with barely any, if any, hubs produced with words. I've seen some, that only do 'picture posts' for hubs and spend the rest of their time preying on the weak. I haven't had any trouble with the so-called "trolls" yet, but maybe it is because they think I am, ha-ha! Fight fire with fire, as the ol' adage states.
I'm wondering now (possibly thinking, but that's debateable) if the original forum question has been answered, will it then be permissable to greet each other and talk about >>>>>> NO? ok, then, well banning works not so good, because some people just never learn!
no, if I am a real sock puppet or troll I will either be doing it for the hell of it or I would be paid for some reason to invade and control the whole shebang in order to promote some other site etc etc etc - BORING! isn't it? On the other hand . . .
Hi Denno. You know I've been avoiding eating lamb since I've known you and that avatar ? I missed you, but your absence gave me an opportunity to have a nice leg o'lamb last sunday. I'll stop now that you're back, but I'll check your presence here regularly. hehehe
I've set up a second ID here today. The reason is because I want to try some very sales-oriented hubs, but want to keep these separate from my regular input (small enough as that may be). When I signed up the second time, the email address I used initially for HP was rejected and I had to use another. So, my question is, does HP staff monitor multiple IDs, sockpuppets, etc? I did register my Adsense and Amazon account details, so presumably am trackable through those. If someone doesn't, what is the situation?
I doubt it is worth anyone's time to keep track of them to be honest.
Anyway if you live in Treorci you deserve as many ID and names as you like in my book. I lived 5 or 6 years in New Quay just below Aberystwyth and was close to major depression like everyone else there !!
It is very illuminating to google your different web identities -if they are at all linkable by similar info you've used when setting them up, you will see that anyone can find out what your different identities are. If it matters to you, then of course you have to jump through some more hoops to make yourself "invisible". I hate all this maneuvering to "market" or having anything to hide, so it is very easy to find out who I am for real online and offline. But I am interested in knowing what kind of minds actually do this stuff - sockpuppeting and trolling. It is a bit of a waste of time though.
What is "sock puppeting" as i want to hear it from 'mega1's mouth because I've never heard of this before. I've heard of the infamous troll crap, but not the other. I'm behind on new-gen jargon, so please enlighten me because I obviously need to be on the look-out for these "sock" people...
I can sometimes - if, for example, I wrote some personal Hubs about creationism/politics/insert controversial topic of choice, I may put off potential clients who do not share my beliefs. A commercial account would create a separation.
I haven't done that, but it is certainly a possibility
I have encountered a few trolls and while mostly I just ignore them they can sometimes be very irritating, But I think that must be a right of passage into the troll kingdom. I have never been refered to as a troll that I am aware of, but it was stated by someone here that they thought I was a Demon.
So what? What do people actually troll for; ain't it all jovial play? Ha-ha! I think they better some people, in a way. Hell, I wished I had trolls frequent me any day and I've tried to the extent of going after known trolls and still had no luck! They won't mess with me since I want them to, ha-ha! In a way, I think they think I'm also one of their clan! Come on, trollies......I'm ready, you pathetic little bastards!
It isn't jovial play though is it - it is irritating as hell to have some juvenile moron asking moronic questions in a place where we often take time to think and writing a considered answer to find in fact there is no-one listening - it is all about just getting a response.
I'm starting to like this China tough-stuff language. Thanks, dude. Yeah, I got the jest of your joke. These forums are good for info, turmoil, anger, and fun... Even though, they are not very productive. Ha-ha!
Sorry I popped out for 30 minutes to cook and eat dinner and photograph the stages and then write up the process for a recipe.
Where were we?
Chinese profanities. The reason they love ours so much is that they really don't have any being deeply cultured and with politeness at the centre of their traditional thinking. This means, unfortunately for us, that even the poorest field worker has better manners than most western people could even imagine, let alone aspire to.
A typical rude remark to someone is talking, what we would economically call, BS would be - "fang ni de go pi" which literally translates - "you are talking dog farts."
Because they do not have our cuss words, especially the foul variety my girlfriend loves to learn them. When they come out of the mouth of a pretty Chinese girl as a foreign language they lose most of their offensive nature. BUT having explained to her that in the UK we call thigh high boots FMB's - and one of her yoga positions I also call FMB - she loudly announced in the shoe shop where we were helping a rather naive christian young 'lady' - look there are some f**k me from behind boots !!
Who told you there weren't any profanities in Chinese?! There are many and quite colorful ones. No disrespect intended, but you may be living as something of the sheltered waiguoren there. Curses don't often directly translate between languages, but Chinese can cuss each other out with the best of them. (let's face it, everyone everywhere can)
My man swears like a trooper as a matter of course! A lot of the Spanish do, I even hear swear words on TV all the time. They are mostly less offensive than the English equivalent. The again, Mexican Spanish use different swear words to the Spanish. eg - the Mexicans use hijo de perra (son of a bitch) and the Spanish use 'hija de puta' which is literaly daughter of a whore. You hear that expresson A LOT, but never hear 'hijo de perra' here. Anyway, back to the subject of trolls and sock-puppets...
I suggest that HP prevent any registered user from posting a new topic to the forums if they have no hubs. They can comment but not start new threads. Most forums that I use have this restriction in place.
There are a lot of us who haven't been feeling safe on the forums. They've felt stalked, harassed and browbeaten.Sadly, some folks go with the letter of the law, but not the spirit of it in their posts. For an excellent...
You will be able to follow forum threads much more easily if you click on Chronological, top right of any thread. You can see who is responding to whom, and whether anyone has already offered the information you are...
Hello all,I was just checking around in my activities to see where I spent too much time (reading in forum threads I am shocked that people write in) on HP or not enough time lately (minding my own business, I guess)....
