excuse the ignorance, but what does it mean if the cpm is low in adsense, do you have to update the content, or change it?

It's the effective cost per thousand. So the higher it is, the more a click is going to be worth.
A small sampling of traffic won't give much of an indication, as some higher or lower CPC's can easily skew the numbers either way.
