I use a 1024 by 768 screen resolution on my pc and have for long time.  It seems that hubpages is only optimized for 800 by 600 viewers.

Will this change in future?  do most people only use 800 by 600 still?
Just seems like a waste of space to me, please forgive me if i am only one who thinks so.

Or is there an option to change this, and i don't see it?

There is no option to change this.  Unforunately designing a site that works at different widths can be fairly complicated, so we've chosed to optimize for the smallest commonly used screen width of 800 pixels.

I believe the Opera (and maybe IE7) will allow you to "zoom" in on any site, which lets you change not just the size the text, but everything on the site.  You could try zooming in 20% or so if you'd like it to fill the entire screen ...
