    Before Mount Everest was discovered, what was the highest mountain in the world?

        I think it might be Ben Nevis.

          It was still Mount Everest.  Even if we didn't know it.

          Unless we count under-sea mountains, of course.

            Ah but you see I thought of that. Yes it would still have been the highest, I'll give you that, but it would not have been called Mount Everest. Not unless God stuck a label on it when he made it.

            So arguably, and I've nothing to do at the moment, it would just been some mountain.  So the highest mountain before Everest was just some mountain.
