I have just written a 2100 word hub and not made one spelling mistake, yay me!
Seriously could Hubpages staff take a look at spell checker because it must be broken.
Are you talking about the spelling checker in your browser? I'm asking because I noticed something really strange starting just today. My browser has a built in spelling checker that underlines any misspelled word while I type. This is not a function of the web site, but of my own browser. I am noticing today that if I mispell a word (like here) then I'm not getting the underlines.
Something about HP has disabled that feature in my browser. Is that maybe what you are referring to as well?

I usually see a red underlined word to indicate that I've misspelled something. It doesn't always work in the hubpages edit window. Why is this? I feel like I have to hire a proofreader because I'm not the best speller...
