The number on my photo bounces around from 50 to 70. What is that all about?
That question alone just knocked you down another point.
It is HP's opinion of you. 100 is the highest.
And yours is an excellent first hub. More of them will increase your score.
Thanks paradigmsearch! So, I have 72 by the first article at the top of the page, and I think my photo has the number 59 by it. What is the number by the photo?
By the 'number on your photo' I guess you are asking the author score. The number on everyone's profile pics' thumbnails are the author scores or the hubbers scores. They represent many things (many things that still are undiscovered and a mystery to me). You can easily understand that this score is your rating, although do not pay much attention to it, you can't really control it. Just write, participate, ask questions, make answers, make forums posts and you'll be ok.
P.S: Same is the score for a hub, which represents its quality.

Not complaining but I don't understand hub. In an attempt to get involved, I started following a lot of Hubbers. Many of them followed me back and I am seeing a dramatic increase in viewing traffic for my hubs. I guess...
