Hard determinism is basically the idea that everything that exists now exists because of all preceding events. Everything in existence has the qualities it has because of all preceding events. Given the first initial conditions of the universe, everything had to have happened the way it did because of the nature of cause and effect. As a consequence, free will and morality are illusions.
