The Art of sockpuppeting on HubPages - how to do it effectively?

I am very interested to figure out the psychosis that creates this thing called sockpuppeting. Do you have any idea. In case you don't know that there are laws that prevent it -

It's the vain hope that people will like you more if they see people liking you. And/or it may make your argument or page seem more convincing, if there's "other people" taking your side.

Alas, the Shill is an old and hoary tradition; it's just that with the internet, people can shill themselves.

If one wanted to be charitable, one could liken sock puppeting to the street performer's practice of putting a few coins in the hat they set on the sidewalk, because people are far, far more likely to add coins to a hat with coins in it than an empty one. Human psychology is funny that way. However, I find the busker's habit of leaving a few coins out to get things started far less irritating than people pretending to be their own fans or supporters. The latter feels more like manipulation, due to the impersonation.

I've also seen the sock puppet approach used far too often as a substitute for persuasive and logical argument, which is irritating, or for ganging up on another member, which is mean-spirited and unjust.

      How to stop that?

We continue to call out, ban, and ridicule sock puppets for being cowards. We continue to point out that it discredits anything they say.

Remember, most forum moderators have tools to help them detect sock puppets. There are ways (I say vaguely, having been on sock puppet patrol for years as a moderator on other sites). Report and flag suspected sock puppets, so that admins can take a look and intervene as needed.

I have to say that my owner gives me pretty much a free rein.

I don't have to support him much except when he gets into a silly argument on the politics forum. Then I need to be a right winger for a while which is a little distasteful but that's what being someones sockie entails.

Funny thing is that he has never supported me in any of my arguments and that definitely is mean spirited.

Anyway, can't stop, he wants to me to go round his Facebook stuff Liking a load of things.  Busy, busy, busy.

I see people get called sock puppets quite often. I don't know if they are, or aren't. It seems as if the fastest way to get accused of being one is to have a disagreement on the religion or political forums; because, I guess, the thought of anyone disagreeing is unfathomable. Only a sock puppet would dare do it.

I've been accused of being one. I don't think I am. Is the sock always aware of the hand?

    1. MelissaBarrett profile image59
MelissaBarrettposted 5 years ago in reply to this

LOL, they are usually aware that they are arguing with themselves or hiding behind an alternative screen name because they don't want to use their real one to post.

That's what we are talking about when we say sock puppet right?

      1. profile image0
Emile Rposted 5 years ago in reply to this

You mean  you think people actually argue with themselves on the forums? That would be the definition of boredom.

I will say that there are a few here I would breath a sigh of relief to find out they were sock puppets attempting to make the other side of the argument look bad, but I've seen crazier; so you never know.

I was joking with my last question. I think I'd be aware of a hand shoved up far enough to move my mouth. Although, it might come in handy from time to time. It might have the foresight to close my mouth before I shoved my foot in it. I'm still struggling to learn how to do that on my own.

It seems that by definition, the sock puppet is created to support the puppeteer as opposed to just being another userid created by an existing member.

        1. MelissaBarrett profile image59
MelissaBarrettposted 5 years ago in reply to this

If it is a SP created to argue a point (purposely badly) that is contrary to original accounts view or to say things that the original account holder wouldn't, then I am lumping them in with the SP label.  In short, if you created an account to become a "persona" separate than yourself specifically for use in forums, then you, by my definition, are a SP.

I wasn't talking about you baby, you know I love you.  And I think you would say the same things with your main account.

          1. A Troubled Man profile image60
A Troubled Manposted 5 years ago in reply to this

Yes, and I think by definition, that wouldn't really qualify as a SP as it does not support the puppeteer.

Only if you actually supported yourself would you be a SP.

Absolutely. Consistency is the art of deception. smile

Revealed: US spy operation that manipulates social media

Military's 'sock puppet' software creates fake online identities to spread pro-American propaganda

"But the effort is amusing as well, for there is absolutely no need to spend millions of dollars to create fake identities online. Any child or troll can do it for free. Millions do. If the government insists on paying, it can use salesforce.com to monitor and join in chats. There is no shortage of social management tools marketers are using to find and mollify or drown out complainers. There's no shortage of social-media gurus, either.

Tools are quite unnecessary, though. Just get yourself a fake email account, Uncle Sam, and you can create and manage anonymous and pseudonymous identities across most any social service."

    Oh, I'm here.

Sorry, I forgot which ID I was using.

In some ways the sockie and master relationship could be viewed as the ying and yank of modern internet culture.  Although, did not Shakespeare himself refer to the art in the Alas poor Sockie speech?

Re. the military operating sockies. Fantastic.  Now the playing field is level. I didn't want to take them on while they were using guns, but a false account is right up my street.

As regards the sock thing generally.  Surely if you don't use your real name on the net then you are immediately a sockie?

    1. profile image0
PhenomWriterposted 5 years ago in reply to this

You got it fatalistically wrong. You can have as many accounts here on hubpages, or on any website. You become a sockpuppet only when you use them on a single thread, making it appear as if they are all different people?

Well Mark Ewbie, this thing is indeed very casual unless its happening on you. I have no mind to get a psychosis, or have any legal procedure on me - otherwise I could very well make you understand what is sockpuppeting.

      1. Mark Ewbie profile image83
Mark Ewbieposted 5 years ago in reply to this

I know it can be very irritating if you are the target.  Unfortunately, making it clear it is very irritating means it will continue to happen - such is the way of some people.

The internet is a great place for the bully, sneak and coward to thrive - total anonymity.  But without anonymity we place ourselves in real physical danger - because there are silent watchers and stalkers too.

Telling people online you are going on holiday?  You are telling potential burglars too? Posting pictures of your children? Let's not dwell on that.

Back to sock puppets.  By necessity we are all an element of false for  our protection.  Being allowed this anonymity means others can abuse it.

I find that not being bothered about the sockie problem helps me cope with it. So what if there's an internet argument somewhere?  It's not really very important. There will be plenty more tomorrow.

        1. profile image0
PhenomWriterposted 5 years ago in reply to this

You are still in haze. Use whatever picture you want, or whatever ip-address you want, and get a psychosis or schizophrenia - I have no problem; but don't abuse others with it. You can very well detect the abuse, can't you Mark? Can't you feel when someone is avoiding reason and still talking back drivel on you? That's a simple indication that's it's either a sockpuppet, or he has constipation or something else.

I had a teacher, who told me once - that if you escape a place for a problem, the next day you will find the same problem where you escaped. Escaping does not help.

Do check this post - to the last - this man caught a sockpuppet in public -  http://hubpages.com/forum/topic/85441

Mark Ewbieposted 5 years ago in reply to this

I checked it.  I had already briefly noticed it - someone upset someone else on the forums or a Hub page.

My reason for being here, mostly, is not to get involved in forum stuff.  It is a waste of time. I am here to write stuff.

If I hit a thread 'problem' it is not a big deal.  Why waste time on it?  My view, or theirs, is not really very important.

If someone leaves a nasty comment on a Hub Page I can delete it.

It's possible to get deeply involved and hurt by forum stuff.  Much better to ignore it, rise above it, move on.

      2. Marisa Wright profile image92
Marisa Wrightposted 5 years ago in reply to this

Actually I don't think that's quite right.  My understanding is that you can have as many accounts as you like on HubPages, but you must choose ONE of those accounts as your main identity, which you then use when participating in the Forums.   You're not supposed to swap around from thread to thread.

        1. profile image0
PhenomWriterposted 5 years ago in reply to this

Oh, thanks. Yes, that's correct. But the actual problem-creator is when someone comes on a single thread with multiple accounts. The only intention it has at that time - is to manipulate.

By the way, if someone uses multiple sim-cards, or fake 'ip-address generator softwares', then they can easily violate these fragile rules.

Of course that's true, but one can only feel sorry for anyone who goes to those lengths to create sockpuppets - clearly they don't have a life, if that's what they have to do for amusement.  They usually end up either getting banned one way or the other, anyway.

Harass:  To subject to aggressive pressure or intimidation, or to make repeated small-scale attacks on a person.

Attack:  To set upon with violent force, or to criticize strongly or in a hostile manner.

If you see anyone harassing or attacking on these forums, you simply hit the "report" button on the offending post and complete the screen that appears.

A HubPages staff member will then read the post.

If the staff member agrees with you, the offender will be banned from these forums for some time.  If it is their first offence, the ban will be only for a few days.  If they are a repeat offender, the ban will be longer and may even be permanent.

If the staff member does not agree with you, no action will be taken.

I observe that you take offence easily, and as a result you risk being found guilty of harassing or attacking yourself!  I advise you to cool down and be more moderate in your language to avoid being subject to a ban.

I have been here for 4 years and I can assure you that the people you are accusing of being sock puppets are nothing of the kind.  People like WriteAngled and Cagsil are well-respected writers here and you will not endear yourself to the community by attacking them.  The use of a pseudonym or screen name does not, in itself, indicate that someone is a sockpuppet.

I saw an ad recently that portrayed a health care system being downed by various competitors in sock puppet fashion.  I was ready to dismiss this topic until I thought about it a bit more.

Someone selling, say, designer socks, could join hubpages and become an authority on designer socks.  Then somebody could take a dislike to them and discredit them via sock-puppetry.  (I'm trying to keep it light, still).

It wouldn't be funny to the person being discredited and thereby potentially losing sales?  Maybe it's a stretch, but I guess sock-puppetry could be more than just fun and games, and indeed, harmful.

No offense, Phenom.  But you're cryptic style, at least on this topic, left me, and probably others, scratching our heads for a bit.  Carry on.  (HP will soon be the leading authority on sock-puppetry, me thinks).

Seems typical sockpuppet behaviour to diss others while hiding behind an alter-ego of a supposed "poet" who seems to know nothing of poetic conventions.

And yes, I am a published poet, although not in English. In Esperanto, under my previous name of Krys Ungar with a collection called Meznokto Metropola.

You're arguing from the sock puppet position to begin with. The only thing you've done is manage to dig the hole you're already standing in deeper.

Yes, sock puppets are used in the forums. They are used to circumvent the banning process.

You're sitting in the exact same seat as you are arguing against. You have managed to distract many people from the original OP, at this point in time, but you're making yourself look worse.

The topic "Hubpages Knowledge Exchange" is about exchanging knowledge. Sock puppet information isn't actually adding knowledge to the community considering most of the community knows what a sock puppet is to begin with.

Your sub-topic, Hubpages, the Community? Yes, sock puppets play a part in the overall community. And what you're discussing or attempting to discuss has been discussed a number of time. It's usually when people have had their ego hurt by one...do they open threads like this.

How to do sock puppet posting effectively? Well, you've managed to do a very good job up to this point. Is your next statement to me going to be...ARE YOU REAL?

You seem to have some kind of axe to grind, PhenomWriter, but it's difficult to work out what it is.  You have a strange style of writing which makes it hard to understand what point you're trying to make.  Perhaps you're not a native English speaker?
