Alloy Steel What Is Available

Lets Talk About Steel !

As I've been selling steel here in the USA since 1979, I've decided to write briefly about what grades of steel that are commercially available. I really enjoy talking about steel--Please let me know if you'd like to discuss anything about raw material.

4140 Alloy Steel has a medium carbon content. This grade is available in round bar, rectangular and square bar and in hexagons. Hollow bar is also available. Surface conditions include Hot Rolled, Cold Drawn, Rough Turned, Turned Ground + Polished and at times is available in a semi-prefinished surface condition. As shipped tempers include Annealed or if you prefer, Heat Treated to approx Rockwell C 26 to 32 hardness range.

4340 Alloy Steel has a medium carbon content. This grade is available in round bar, rectangular and square bar and in hexagons. Hollow bar is also available. Surface conditions include Hot Rolled, Cold Drawn, Rough Turned, Turned Ground + Polished and at times is available in a semi-prefinished surface condition. As shipped tempers include Annealed or if you prefer Heat Treated to approx Rockwell C 26 to 32 hardness range. With the added element of Nickel, 4340 can at times allows a part to have better developed depth of hardness than 4140

4130 Alloy Steel has a medium carbon content. This grade is available in round bar, rectangular and square bar and in hexagons. Hollow bar is also available. Surface conditions include Hot Rolled, Cold Drawn, Rough Turned, Turned Ground + Polished and at times is available in a semi-prefinished surface condition. As shipped tempers include Annealed, Normalized and in some sizes available heat treated to a low hardness range of Rockwell C 23 to 32.

8740 is an Alloy Steel with a medium carbon content. Being a tri-element grade 8740 has 3 alloying elements being Chrome-Nickel and Moly.
This grade is available round bar, Surface conditions available are Hot Rolled, Cold Drawn
and at times is available in a semi-prefinished surface condition

8620 is an Alloy Steel with a medium carbon content. Being a tri-element grade 8620 has 3 alloying elements being Chrome-Nickel and Moly. It at times is the lowest cost case hardenable steel available. This grade is available round bar, Surface conditions available are Hot Rolled, Cold Drawn and at times is available in a semi-prefinished surface condition

4620 Alloy Steel is Moly-Nickel based grade with a low carbon content. With the added element of Nickel-at times this grade is considered an upgrade over other grades of case hardenable steel . This grade is available round bar, flat bar and plate. Surface conditions available are Hot Rolled, Cold Drawn

The most important alloying element in Alloy Steel is Carbon, and after the remainder of all other alloying elements are taken into account, then the balance of what is in the steel is Iron. Any questions or comments are welcome !
