Ask DJ Lyons: Math Challenge for numbers 2 to 9
Fun Mathematical Activity for Elementary Students (grades 3 to 5)
Here is a really fun mathematical activity for elementary students. It is most appropriate for grades 3 to 5; however, it would also be appropriate for any grade student who wants and needs to improve his or her multiplication facts and short division skills. I like to call them Math Lollipops because you are going to work the problem down and then back up again - just like you might lick a lollipop.
The way this works is that you can take any number whatsoever. You will multiply that number by 2, mulitple that product by 3, multiply that product by 4, multiply that product by 5, multiply that product by 6, multiply that product by 7, multiply that product by 8, and multiply that product by 9.
Then you take that final product. Now you are going to work the process backward using short division. You will divide that final product by 2, divide that divisor by 3, divide that divisor by 4, divide that divisor by 5, divide that divisor by 6, divide that divisor by 7, divide that divisor by 8, and divide that final divisor by 9.
Drum roll, please. It's magic. You have found your way back to your original number again.
To make the process clear, we will work with the number 1. Check out these pictures.
Multiply 1 by the number 2
Multiply that product by 3
Multiply that product by 4
Multiply that product by 5
Multiply that product by 6
Multiply that product by 7
Multiply that product by 8
Multiply that product by 9
Divide that final product by 2
Divide that divisor by 3
Divide that divisor by 4
Divide that divisor by 5
Divide that divisor by 6
Divide that divisor by 7
Divide that divisor by 8
Divide that final divisor by 9
Behold, ..., you are back to your original number 1!
Here is how the multiplication page should look
Here is how the short division page should look
Here is the entire process in a nutshell

Gr. 2-5. These two large-format paperbacks offer explanations and activities for children who don't understand or haven't mastered multiplication and division. By taking different approaches to explain the same concepts, Long increases the probability that something will click in the student's mind. Some chapters, such as the one on multiplying by one, are excellent for building solid understanding. Others, such as the chapter on dividing by erasing zeroes, are disappointing in this regard. The cheerful ink drawings help make the books more inviting. Overall, these will be useful supplemental resources for students who need some help with the fundamental skills of multiplication and division. Carolyn Phelan

Kids will enjoy the fast-paced fun of this numbers game, and parents will love watching them learn. To play, you simply place the three standard dice and three custom dice (with numbers 0, 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9) into the fun dice shaker then roll them out and place them into the dice tray. Set the sand timer and have the score pad ready to record the number of unique equations each player makes using the numbers rolled. Equations can use simple addition or subtraction, or multiplication and division for making the game more challenging as your child's skills improve.
Multiplication is the foundation of many higher-level math topics. Your child’s ability to master multiplication facts can dramatically improve his or her current and future academic success. This software allows you to set up a series of tests that can be varied by making the problems sequential or random and by setting time limits for completion. The scores are stored to help identify weak areas. The test history shows test completion status, number of problems solved, time elapsed, and number of correct answers. The more tests your child takes, the more you know what to include in the next test. For instance, if a child consistently misses multiplication of 8s, then the tests can be set to concentrate on 8s and to adjust the completion time. Students will love the challenge of beating their own time and adding new problems to their tests. The following elements are built into the software to ensure that users can meet specific math goals: Customized tests, Variable time settings, Random or sequential order of math facts, Independent practice, Games, such as Multiplication Tic-Tac-Toe, to reinforce memorization, Availability of detailed progress reports. Children build confidence as speed and accuracy improve.
Multiplication & Division Games
The award winning, strategic math game you'll flip for! Easy to learn, challenging to play and great for the whole family. This game perfectly combines math and strategy. Roll the dice then add, subtract or multiply the numbers to land on board squares. For 2 to 4 players.
It looks like a Jedi light saber (and surely more than one Star Wars fan will play with it as such), but this unique and colorful toy is actually a snappy way to master multiplication. Create multiplication problems by turning and spinning the dials. Then, with a click of a button, an LCD display screen lets you see and hear the correct answer. Catchy music makes learning fun, and a friendly, cartoonish voice repeats the answer, then encourages and congratulates with each success. Included are simple instructions that make learning and using easy. This cool tool can be used to build math equations, self-test, learn multiplication tables in sequence, or be tested with random equations. Made of hard plastic, this item is extremely portable and has automatic shut- off. It is somewhat loud, however, so it's not appropriate for quieter environments. --Tom Keogh
Math war is an exciting way for children to learn their multiplication table while having fun. Players take turns laying down cards and giving the answer to the problem on their card.
Need some help with those tricky multiplication tables? This simple educational tool helps kids develop math skills by giving them an easy learning guide. Designed as a simple grid of square plastic buttons, nine across and nine down, each button in the keyboard represents an individual multiplication problem. Push a square--4 x 5, say--and the correct answer magically appears--20! Kids can test themselves, or take turns with parents or friends to make a game of it. A great plus: no moving parts or batteries. Measuring 9 inches by 8.5 inches, the keyboard is made of durable, lightweight plastic, easy to take on a trip or tuck in a backpack. --Marianne Painter
