Binaural Beats: the Revolutionary Sound That Kills Pain, Increases IQ, and Allows Insomniacs to Sleep at Will.

What Are Binaural Beats and How Do They Work?

Binaural Beats. You can't really call it music; more like listening to a combination of different tones or frequencies. In fact it is strikingly similar to white noise on a television. It doesn't sound particularly wonderful but the affects it has on the brain is intriguing to say the least.

When these tones are played into each ear simultaneously via stereo headphones, your mind interprets it as a a third unique sound. The sudden change in frequencies has a balancing effect on the brain hemispheres, which can be felt as a shift in ones consciousness or a change in mood. The effects depend on the combination of sound frequencies used.

You can get Binaural Beat recordings for a whole host of things. For example, there are tracks to improve concentration, relieve pre exam nerves or to help insomniacs fall into a deep, well needed sleep. You can even get Binaural Beats to put you into a deep meditative state, similarly achieved by the most spiritually advanced of our kind, who have dedicated their lives to the art of meditation.

If you want to know the science behind Binaural Beats and how the frequencies are used, TurboLotus has written a very good article about it.

What Do I Need to Do Before I Listen to Binaural Beats for the First Time?

  1. Most importantly, you need to invest in some good quality, stereo headphones in order to benefit from your Binaural Beat recordings. This is because your right and left ear has to hear two completely different sounds in order for it to work correctly. Hearing the Binaural Beat recordings through loud speakers will not work all that well, if at all.

  2. Choose to listen to the recordings in a quiet, peaceful environment where you will not be disturbed. If you can, take the phone off the hook. This is your time. Enjoy it.
  3. Try to set aside any preconceived judgements or opinions. Just like hypnosis, if you tell yourself it won't work, it probably won't. An open heart and mind is the best way to start.

Are Binaural Beats Safe?

Some people worry that Binaural Beat recordings are unsafe to listen to.The truth is, some people are more sensitive to the affects of Binaural Beats than others...lower frequencies for instance, will take you into a very deep, relaxed, sleep state. This sudden shift in consciousness may feel quite strange to some but this doesn't mean to say it doing any harm.

To reduce feelings of disorientation, it is best to listen to recordings which are closer to your own natural frequency (for a typical person, 20hz or less), then working down over a period of time. So for instance, Binaural Beat recordings that encourage sharper focus, will be in the higher frequency range, as opposed to deep meditation, which will be much lower (see chart below for details).

If you get a headache whilst listening to Binaural Beat recordings, do the sensible thing and stop listening. Maybe try it another time, or as I have said above, try listening to Binaural Beat tracks that are designed for beginner level and work your way up to the more advanced over a period of time.

If you suffer from Epilepsy, heart problems or if you take mood-altering medication, you should consult with a doctor before listening to Binaural Beat CDs.

The Effects of Binaural Beats on the Brain

Another topic people worry about is the use of deep subliminal messages often hidden within audio recordings of this nature. They are not always used but some music companies use them to trigger thoughts and feelings in the listener, such as greater self confidence, anxiety relief etc. In other words, brainwashing! Just something to be aware of when searching for Binaural Beat Albums.

Obviously it is not safe to listen to Binaural Beat recordings (or any deep relaxation music for that matter) whilst you are driving or operating machinery. That could be disastrous!

My Friend's Personal Experience

My friend, Sarah, used to get the worst headaches on a daily basis; as a consequence, she had to take numerous amounts of pain killers to get her through the day.

When I told her about the technology of Binaural Beats, she couldn't wait to try the audio track I found dedicated to soothing migraine pain. The frequencies basically fool the brain into thinking it is free of discomfort! Sounds too good to be true doesn't it?

I promptly gave her a copy of the CD to listen to. The next day she said how surprisingly good it was! In her words, she said "it just eases the pain away. It's like the pain is floating away from your head".

I too, have tried this when I had a headache and I can vouch for the fact that it helps relieve pain.

My Personal Experience with Binaural Beats

A few years ago, I was a tired night shift worker. I was completely exhausted to the core and I just couldn't sleep properly. My mind was drained and my concentration was virtually non existent at times but I carried on, regardless. Stupid, I know. It got to the point where I was seriously concerned for my health... but I was young and in need of money.

That is when I had an amazing thought... (other than giving up the nights, of course) what if I could train my mind into meditating on such a deep level that my brain could fully recharge itself when I was resting during the day. I was already into meditation in a big way so I went trawling the internet for some good meditation music to help sooth my body and mind. It wasn't long before I came across Binaural Beats.

This one particular album featured one very unique audio track called, "power siesta". It claimed to trigger the brain into a deep, well rested sleep...listening to the track for 30 mins was apparently equivalent to 4 hours sleep! It sounded too good to be true and I didn't really believe it but I tried it anyway.

I played the Binaural Beats through my stereo headphones and snuggled under my duvet in anticipation. Before long, I was consciously aware that I was dreaming... although I was awake at the same time. It was quite a strange experience but an amazing one at that. Did I feel well rested afterwards? Yes, I did. Did it feel like I had slept for hours on end? Possibly not hours but I did feel extremely well rested and more alert.

I started to listen to the Power Siesta during my one hour sleep break at work and I really did feel an improvement in my overall performance; especially after a week or so. Even now, when I need a bit more energy, I will listen to it.

Will everybody have such great results as me? I don't know. I am not even sure if it has a placebo effect on the brain or whether I am actually reaping the benefits from the different frequencies but what I do know, is that I love how it makes me feel.

Hemi Sync is just one of the places you can purchase Binaural Beat CDs

Where Can I Buy Binaural Beat CDs?

From my experience, I have found the best selection of CDs online from independent retailers. Examples I can think of include, Hemi Sync by the Monroe Institute and HoloSync by Centerpointe Research Institute. I must note though - some of these CDs are ridiculously expensive, especially those by Holosync.

If anybody comes across some good Binaural Beat CDs on the high-street, I would love to receive your recommendations.

If you don't know where to start looking, try looking on Amazon and Ebay for a head start. That way, you can read the reviews of other customers to get a feel for the quality of the recordings.

Some Binaural Beat albums are even free to download! Just make sure If you are downloading them, to ensure the Binaural Beat CDs are not in compressed format (like the kind you find on some pirated sites). If the CD is compressed, it would have lost a lot of the valuable frequency information. In other words, it will be useless!

The key to finding a good Binaural Beat CD is do some research...search through forums to find some really good recommendations from people who have lots of experience on the topic. Don't get ripped off by paying hundreds of dollars for a CD which is not all that effective.
