Books 2nd Grade
The Books 2nd Grade list includes most of the best books for young adults in 2nd grade. This site provides links to free book resources and links to purchase many of the books and additional resources, when available. There are literally millions of titles that could have been placed in this list. Every attempt was made to include only the best teacher-selected titles. These are the books teachers use most often. Over two hundred teachers were polled in order to make the list of the best books for young adults.
If you don’t find what you’re looking for on this list, you might try the book list for 1st or 3rd grade. It's undeniable that the difference between a 1st grade book and a 3rd grad book can be quite significant, so I recommend that you select books based on your child's ability level more so than their age. For that reason, I would encourage you to consider looking at several grade levels around your targeted age. Gifted children might benefit from something more challenging, and remedial readers might benefit from a title below grade level. Please don't limit yourself to only one grade level.
Book levels are based on reading difficulty, not content or plot. Many books are highly readable but challenging in different ways, typically incorporating symbolism and other important literary devices. It is entirely appropriate to read books above or below the reading level you are targeting if the book challenges the reader in other ways, perhaps in a provocative way. With many of the books on this list, I would certainly push them to a higher level because of content. For example, The Catcher in the Rye is certainly a push for fourth grade in terms of content. Perhaps pushing it to seventh or eighth grade may be an option. The same thing can be said about many books that are appropriate for second grade.
