A cardiac ablation is performed when a person is having an abnormal amount of irregular heart arrhythmias to the point that is very uncomfortable or medically dangerous.

The doctor will decide if this is the best procedure for your particular type of hear arrhythmia. You will have to go without food past midnight and have the procedure done at the hospital or outpatient unit in a cardiac catherization lab.

Your arms. groin and neck area will be cleansed well and prepared for insertion of a catheter with local anesthesia. You also may be given some medication to either relax you or help your ot forget the procedure or both.

Under live X-ray the cardiologist will pass a catheter into your heart through your blood vessels. Once at your heart he will be able to determine what part or parts of the heart are causing irregular electrical impulses that are causing the arrhythmia. He will then use electrodes or cold energy to stop the problem. This will leave small scar tissue where the procedure is done and block the impulses.

During the procedure the doctor will constantly monitor your heart-rate, blood pressure and breathing for any complications.

You might feel

  • lightheadedness
  • burning or tingling when medication is injected or the energy is used
  • stronger and slower heart beat

The electrical stimulation used is either

  • radio frequency
  • cryoablation
  • lasers
