Santo Domingo was founded in 1498 by Bartholomew Columbus brother of Christopher Columbus who discovered the island during his first voyage of discovery in 1492.
The city became the center political power of the New World. The Spaniards build the first cathedral, the first hospital, first custom house and the first university in the Americas.
The first human rights speech was also pronounced here in defense of Taino native who were treated harshly as slaves by the conquistadors.
It was the first city laid out on a grid pattern which was the model for many other colonized towns in the Latin America.
The UNESCO organization has proclaimed colonial Santo Domingo as a World Heritage site.

Basilica Catedral Santa Maria de la Encarnacion is located on the Columbus Square in Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone- Its construction was started in 1514 being completed around 1540..
Its architecture has elements of the Gothic style predominant in Europe, but its fanciful friezes and ornamentation mark it as Plateresque.
The 500-year old Mahogany doors is still there opening with same centuries-old key.
Visitors can see the silver hammered altar and some cannon balls on the roof fired by Sir Francis Drake during his invasion in the 16th century when he ransacked the city and its inhabitant had to pay a heavy ransom in gold before he sailed away.

This beautiful hombe around the 16th century belonged to the Tostado family. There lived Francisco de Tostado who was a noted notary of the colony. His son Francisco Tostado de Pena was the author of the first sonnet in the Americas.This house is famous for its gothic elizabethan germinal window which was also the first in the Western Hemisphere.
Casa de Tostado is now the 16th Century Dominican Family museum. Visitors enjoy its ample rooms and beautiful garden with its original well in the patio.

The Hospital San Nicolás de Bari was the first hospital in the Americas. It was built between 1503 and 1508 during the time when Fray Nicolás de Ovando was Governor of the island. You can visit the ruins because an earthquake destroyed most of the buiding in the 19th century.

Admiral Christopher Columbus led his three ships - the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria - out of the Spanish port of Palos on August 3, 1492. in search of gold and species in Asia.
About 90 mariners were in the 3 caravels.
On friday October 12th they saw land for the first time.
Next Friday they touch land in one of the Bahamas islands.
On December 5th Columbus discovered the island or Hispaniola which is shared nowadays between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
The island was fertile and gold was abundant which made it ideal por exploiting it in benefit of Spain.
Later on the considered that the southern coast of the island was the right spot for the first city in the world.
Columbus had founded La Isabella in the northern coast but decided to abandon it to continue on his quest for for China or the Indies.
