Creation or Evolution: What's the Evidence

Contrasting Theories

The creation/evolution debate has raged since the theory of evolution began. The theory was proposed before Darwin, although he made the theory popular. A brief summary of the two theories is in order.

According to Creation theory, an almighty God created, ex nihilo, the entire universe and all the matter and energy therein. According to the theory, this event occurred sometime between 6000 and 7000 years ago, necessitating a young earth position for pure creationists.

According to Evolution theory, matter and energy created itself during the so-called Big Bang, which occurred sometime around 13 or 14 billion years ago. This necessitates an old-earth position for evolutionists.

Creation theory and Evolution theory are diametrically opposed; they do not and cannot agree.

Proof Impossible?

Both creationists and evolutionists have challenged the other to show 'scientific' proof for their theory. However, both positions will always be unable to provide 'scientific' proof. I will explain.

For proof to be scientific, it must be gathered via the scientific method. By definition, this includes repeated laboratory testing with repeated results. Neither creation nor evolution can be repeated in a laboratory even one time, so laboratory results are impossible to obtain. Thus, there can be no scientific proof for either theory.

We appear to be at an impasse. How are we to decide which theory is closest to the truth? One point of opposition between the theories is the timetable of events - young earth vs. old earth. There is evidence around us that points to one side of these opposed positions.

Evidence from Astronomy

We can find, in our solar system, many points of evidence to consider.

As astronomy has shown, the earth's rotational speed is slowing at the rate of 1 second per 18 months average. According to evolution theory, the earth was formed 4.54 billion years ago, with life appearing within 1 billion years. Accounting for the 1 billion years, the rotational speed of the earth would have been 2.36 billion seconds faster per year than it currently is. That works out to an additional 6.47 million seconds per day. Could life actually form under such conditions? Wind speeds alone, due to the coriolis effect, would prevent life forming. This points to a young earth.

Astronomy has also shown that the moon's orbit around the earth is getting larger, due to momentum transfer from the earth. Again we must consider the 4.54 billion years since the earth's formation. At a rate of even 1 cm per year, we must figure that the moon was 4.54 billion cm closer to earth, and 3.54 billion cm closer when life formed on the planet. This works out to 22000 miles closer. The gravitational forces on the planet would prevent any life from forming. Again, the evidence points to a young earth.

Continuing with the astronomy theme, we know that Jupiter is currently cooling down. An object cannot continue cooling indefinitely; eventually the object will be cooled off. If the formation of Jupiter roughly coincided with the formation of earth, 4.54 billion years should be enough to cool off completely. Jupiter's state points to a young universe and young earth.

Other Evidence

The physics law Conservation of Angular Momentum shows that any object released from a spinning object will continue to spin the same direction. This happens because the outer edge of the released object is moving faster than the inner edge of the object. The Big Bang theory states that the result of the Big Bang was a single mass of spinning matter from which the universe expanded. If this is true, then all objects in the universe- galaxies, planets, stars, etc -should be spinning the same direction. This is not the case. In our solar system alone are several examples. Neptune spins on its side compared to the rest of the system, while several moons spin backwards and some travel backwards around their planets. The Big Bang's 'single mass of spinning matter' can't stand up to this evidence.

Numerous other points of natural evidence exist which point to either a young earth or the truth of the Biblical account of history. The oldest desert, coral reef and tree in the world are only around 4000 years old. That points to a catastrophe about 4000 years ago, after which these icons would begin to develop. According to the Bible, Noah's worldwide flood occurred about 4400 years ago, just about the right time. Further evidence for a major world catastrophe can be found in the rotation of the earth. Astronomy has shown that our planet has wobbled on its axis, much like a spinning top that is bumped. According to the math, our planet was struck by a massive object about 4400 years ago. This catastrophe lends strong support to the Biblical account of the timing of the worldwide flood in the days of Noah.

Conclusion

Whether you choose to believe in God and the truth of the Bible or in evolution and state-funded public school textbooks, the real life evidence points in only one direction- Creation. You don't need the Bible to 'prove' creation, the evidence is out there to find. Do your own serious and objective research, leave behind the preconditioned responses brainwashed into you by your public school education, and find the answer for yourself. Don't be one of the impassioned illogical screamers (from both sides) that shout out their beliefs without real support. Examine the evidence and come to your own conclusion. You know mine.

Wow-you've done a lot of research into this! I do believe 100% in creation, but I personally know people who believe "both" ways-a little bit of evolution as well as creation while others are on either side of the coin. Thank you for sharing this. What a very insightful hub!:-)

Hi I'm like CarolineVABC in that I don't have any problems with science or the spiritual. For me science is contained within the laws of the physical realm and spirituality follows the laws of the spiritual realms. At the present time, science won't find much proof of the spiritual simply because they are looking for it within the physical, using physcial instruments and thinking. Having said this behind 'all' I do think there is a higher consciousness. I read once a very nice way to view it - the great spirit or God or whatever your faith's name may be, basically creates the universe with the outbreath and takes it back with an in-breath. On the out-breath again, we go back to beginnings and continue within these cycles of physical life/physical death. Of course this is a simplistic view point. Anyway, I really enjoyed this hub and your research made for fascinating reading. Many thanks for sharing.

Very interesting. I think the layout of the universe is also a great argument for creation. If the universe was created by a big bang explosion, the universe would exhibit a pattern in which the components inside the exploding material would be evenly distributed by the rate of the force. The universe is very clustered and random. It does not suggest that it was created by an explosion. Great thoughts and a great debate.

awesome hub. i am one who believes in GOD and CHRIST. I believe this world is between 6-7 thousand yrs old. i believe what the KJV bible teaches. i believe you cannot pick and choose what part of it you want to believe and toss the rest out. you either believe it all, or none of it. voted up and more and certainly sharing it. keep it up friend.

I have deleted a host of comments, most of which were vehement arguing over what was likely a misunderstanding. If my action on this offends you,oh well.

Keep your comments rational and non-inflammatory and you'll be approved. Also, be open-minded to the discussion that will occur.

Well, Porshadoxus no matter what position you take, unless their are credible eyewitness accounts (and that is impossible) no one can ever know for sure what happened and any opinion requires the exercise of faith no matter how you look at it. The more questions scientific advances answer many times more questions are created that need to be answered. Eventually science will, if it hasn't already, have to move from the limitations of the "natural" to the possibilities of the supernatural - it is only a matter of time.

If God created, He is the eyewitness. He has communicated His actions to us through the Bible.

All the forensic evidence on the planet points to a young earth, which agrees with the Bible. The so-called proofs of evolution in textbooks have long ago been shown as false- some outright lies and fabrications.

Yes, the Biblical position requires faith in God- a being who has the power to create. Yes, the evolution position requires faith that randomness has overcome unbeatable odds. And all it takes is billions of years in which to hide.
