Updated on September 16, 2011

Dr.B.C.Roy

It is obviously true that fame can not be easily earned in anyone's life. Dr.Bidhan Chandra Roy was such a great person who earned ultimate fame and also doctorate for his incomparable social services. He was born on July 1st 1882 in Patna city of Bihar, India as fifth boy to Mr.Prakash Chandra, Excise Inspector.

Though he was from a royal family, he had been a kind hearted and decided to become a medical doctor since most of the people in and around his area were poor and unable to get proper medical assistance. For this reason he proposed to go to London for his medical studies. He was so intelligent that he was able to complete his both F.R.C.S and M.R.C.P courses within two and half years. After completing his medical courses, he came back to India and started free medical services for the poor people living around his areas. He felt very much whenever he happened to meet starving people and ones suffering from diseases. He tried his best to upgrade the life standard of those poor people.

Dr.B.C.Roy was also a renowned freedom fighter of early India. He had understood well that freedom for India could be possible only with healthy Indians being free from diseases. He had been also one of the true follower, friend as well as the doctor of Father of India, Mahatma Gandhiji. While Mahatma Gandhiji was undergoing fast during Quit India Movement near Poona, he was appointed to look after the health condition of Mahatma.

He Preferred Politics to Succeed in His Social Services

Dr.B.C.Roy realized himself that the politics could be very helpful for the successful social services. In 1931 he was elected as the Mayor of Calcutta Corporation. It is nature that most of our people would give up their profession after reaching higher posts in their life. But it was not happened in the life of Dr.B.C.Roy. He continued his medical services to the poor people even then he became the Mayor of Calcutta.

In 1947, when India got freedom, Mahatma Gandhiji wished to make him as the CM of West Bengal. But, Roy never agreed with Mahatma as he feared that that might affect his social services. However, he was later convinced by Mahatma Gandhiji and became the CM of West Bengal in the year 1948. Again he proved himself as he took birth for the welfare of poor community. He never liked to stop servicing to the poor people. He used to organise some time from his hectic schedule for the social service. This type of incredible social service by a CM got applause from all over the world.

Dr.B.C.Roy Received Prestigious Bharat Ratna Award!

To honour his great services, the Government of India offered him prestigious Bharat Ratna award in the year 1961. He loved so much the poor suffering people that he donated his own house for running a nursing home for them. It is indeed a miracle that his both birth date and expired date are same. Yes! This Great man of India expired on July 1st of 1962. July first of each year is celebrated as All India Doctors' Day. On that day many renowned doctors from various parts of the country will receive Dr.B.C.Roy awards.
