Gang-Rape as Punishment
This gang-rape of a woman was a result of a an elder of a village in West Bengal, eastern India. To most reading this in the West, what happened is simply mind boggling. I guess one can say this about many within India, a country that seems to love to rape women. Horrendous rapes occur there every year.
The village elder ordered the woman to be gang raped, punishment because she planned to marry a man from outside of her village. When Khaliq Shiekh asked his girlfriend to marry him, she was happy and said yes. Then, the village elder caught wind of this dastardly event and forbid it. The residents of the village, who agreed with the elder, went to the home of the woman and seized her. The also seized her soon to be husband. Both were taken to the village square where they charged with violating village law. The elder fined them $400 each.
It could have ended there. The would-be groom paid his share, however, the woman, who did not have the money relied on her parents, who refused to pay such extortion.
The village elder then told the men in the village to, "enjoy her". Throughout that day, she was raped in a house. The woman later stated, "I lost count of how many times I was raped". Once nearly every man in the village had had sex with her, the elder threatened the family that if they reported the rape, their home would be burned down.
The woman was taken to a hospital and the facts reported. Police finally became involved and so far have arrested 12 men.
