God's Creatures

God’s Creatures

The live oak tree
Is a haven… for
Blue jays, cardinals,
And squirrels.
Who feast together
On popcorn
In the early
Morning sun

They hang
Upside down
Near the old
Coffee cans,
So hungry they
do not wait to dig in;
God’s creatures…
So enchanting
In safety…
They play
In our backyard,
Munching popcorn;
Doing battle;
In the warm
Texas sun

In Texas where we live the blue jays and cardinals come every spring. Many squirrels wander the neighborhood where we live. My husband loved to feed them popcorn and bread during the time when we lived in this home. They were a joy to watch from the big picture window in our breakfast room.

Thank you, habee! I enjoy reading this poem even though I wrote it. It takes me back to the house where I used to live!

Loved this! I think of animals as God's creatures, also, and we're supposed to help take care of them!
