H.A.L.T., It's Back To School Time!

There is an acronym in recovery called HALT, although, I did not create this acronym, I believe it's a good one for our student's to look at while returning back to school. Don't become Too Hungry, Don't Become Too Angry, Don't Become Too Lonely, and Don't Become Too Tired (H.A.L.T.). Our children are faced with so many peer pressures and many want to fit in among their peers. And some will go to some extreme measures to feel apart. I can remember, while, I was attending my former high school, Whites Creek High School, there were sororities and fraternities one could join. Although, I don't believe the High School, approve these organizations, I believe they were set up independently and not directly related to the school. It amazed me how some of the guys would join the groups and would be beaten up by the other members to be apart. This seem more like a gang to me, but nevertheless, the students, desired to succumb to this abuse to feel apart. They were not just physically hungry for food, but they were hungry for acceptance and belonging. This can be dangerous, because one becoming too hungry can cause one to go to extreme measures to fulfill that desire, which ultimately, could kill them.

So, parents, that's, why, it's very important that we established communication with our children. So they will not go to some extreme measure to try to find love, in all the wrong places. Many of us can remember starting school and returning to school. For some of us we may have had butterflies in our stomach and fear. Some of us, remember the bullies, who would take other kids lunch money. While, I guess they became too hungry!. In addition, I can remember some of the fights that would happen on our way home, after school. Some kid would tell the other kid, "I am going to beat you up after school," I guess, that child became too angry. Not being able to control one's anger, not only, will cause you to get in fights, but will also, cause you to receive in school suspensions, suspensions, and even incarceration. Anger is a very important feeling to master.

Don't become too lonely, I remember, seeing some teenage girls who would become too lonely, who some older folk's would say, "being fast", some would, have boys in and out of their homes, while their parents were not there. And as a result, some became pregnant. Sometimes, students will go to extreme means not to be alone, even if it means smoking a joint, drinking, etc. Sometimes, it's better to be alone than to be with a whole crowd of people. Sometimes being alone can save one's self.

The last letter is T, Don't become too tired. I guess this is good for all Metro Davidson Students and surrounding areas. It's difficult to concentrate at school, when you haven't had the proper rest. In addition, don't wait to the last minute to complete the project or paper, especially, if you are in junior high or high school, mysterious things happen, like the computer will not work, the printer want print the report. HALT! This school year can be an exciting year for you. But remember, HALT! Don't Become Too Hungry, Don't Become Too Angry, Don't Become Too Lonely, and, Don't Become Too Tired! H.A.L.T. Have A Wonderful School Year!
