Today, in an increasingly connected world where we are constantly increasing our public space and how others view us is just as important as how we view ourselves. Self esteem cannot be faked, however; making a bogus impression towards others will not make the cut. It is difficult to befuddle others these days; it is possible to get away with it the first time, but over time others will view the way you really relate with them, and discover that you're not as confident as you show yourself to be. Thus self esteem need not start from the provocations of others; it should start from you. Building up self esteem, while affected by external factors, can be practiced over time. Once we engage in acts that lower self esteem like feeling constant self-pity or thinking down on our self and what we do, others will view us less favorably (especially in a competitive environment where the strong survives best).

The "I can't do it.... I can't do it" mentality should be replaced by a realistic "I can do it... I can do it" mentality. That is one of the first ways on how to improve self esteem. Once you think that you actually can do it, you are more likely to take pragmatic steps to really do it (if the goal is attainable enough), which, if successful, will make you realize that there is so much that you can show to the world.
Another key step for improving self esteem is to refrain from comparing yourself to others too often. You have abilities; others have abilities; because of the differences in your genetic makeup, surroundings, and upbringing, there are bound to be differences between you and everyone else. After you have explored what your abilities are and know to yourself that you really can deliver.
The next step for improving your self esteem is to develop the skills that you are interested in developing, instead of continually sulking that you don't have what others have. Looking at what others have can help to improve self esteem if you view it in a positive way, for instance, you admire someone who has succeeded in any field of endeavor you want to enter, and that person can inspire you to greater achievements. Taking concrete steps to achieve your goal - and not sulking - builds confidence and improves self esteem.
The techniques discussed above for improving self esteem can only work if they are backed up by action. Surely, saying "I can do it.... I can do it" increases the probability of your actually doing it, but means nothing if you don't do it. Self esteem is best exemplified by action, by making a positive contribution to yourself and to your community. Action is a way of bettering your standing in your own eyes and in others'; at the very least, delivering results in whatever you do ensures that others' appraisals on your self esteem will surely not be fake.
