Some quotations and comments concerning the topic of success.

Although I am not a big fan of Woody Allen I think he made one of the best comments about life and success when he said “Eighty percent of success is showing up.” I would add to that my own observation that the other twenty percent might be to “fit in.” My own experience in life is that if you go to work or join a social organization you do tend to be accepted as a member of the group if you just show up fairly regularly. However, it probably helps if you make some effort to be part of the group. This is especially true when you want to become a member as an outsider wanting to be let in. The most prevalent example of this is when one is looking for a job.

Over the years I have read about the subject of how to interview, how to write a resume etc. I have also participated in groups and counseling on the subject. I think I can fairly sum it up by saying the aim is to make yourself appear as if you already belong to the organization. The first question that comes up is how to dress for an interview. Often one is told to dress like you would on the job. However, this is not always exactly true. Sometimes you would wear a suit to an interview but dress more casual on the job. The truth is, there is no formula. The way I see it is you want to dress so as to fit in. Before you ever interview, you want to know how to look like you already belong. Some people have gone so far as to park outside the building and watch the people going in. See how they dress.

The same philosophy applies to education. In general an employer does not care too much what your college major is. They are interested in what your major says about you. If you have a degree in history, will you fit in where everyone else has an accounting degree? Did you go to an Ivy League school and the people in the firm went to state Universities? The whole idea is that the gatekeepers. The people who interview you to get access to being part of the organization look to see if you belong. It might not be conscious but that is pretty much the case.

Some other quotations

If A is success in life, than A equals x plus y plus z. Work is x; y is play; and z is keeping your mouth shut.

Albert Einstein.

· Many people talk a good game but don’t accomplish much. I’m not sure if that is what he meant, but it fits.

“I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.

Bill Cosby

· At one point in my own life a friend who was a career counselor told me “you can’t be all things to all people.” It is a hard habit to kick.

“There is only one success, to be able to spend your life in your own way.” Christopher Morley (1890-1957)

“What’s money? A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do.” Bob Dylan

· Some years ago I heard a woman talking about how her relatives did not like the fact that her father-in-law would only take on jobs that he found to be interesting to work on. Another person responded that he sounded like “a truly successful man.” I agree. If he was in a financial position to pick and choose his assignment, I think he should do so

.

“Real success is finding your lifework in the work you love. “ David McCullough (1933- )

· I am of the opinion that we all have talents or abilities that we are born with. I also believe these are God given. As such I think a person should be seeking ways to use those talents in order to find fulfillment in life.

“Aim for success, not perfection. Never give up your right to be wrong, because then you will lose the ability to learn new things and move forward with your life.” Dr. David M. Burns

· I think if a person becomes over concerned with being perfect or afraid to be wrong, it tends to become inhibiting and they become afraid to do anything in fear of being wrong.

“Try not to become a man of success but rather to become a man of value.” Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

· Yes, to be a worthwhile person is a better goal than to be a person with the material things we associate with success.

“Nobody cleared a path for themselves by giving up.” Alicia Bessette Simply from Scratch, 2010

· No matter how you define success for yourself it is necessary to be persistent and not to give up easily.

“You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don’t try” Beverly Sills (1929- )

“It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all. In which case you’ve failed by default.” J.K. Rowling

· These two quotes both say that one should not fear failure so much that they don’t even try in fear of failing because they are admitting failure by not trying.

I hope you have found these quotations about success and the hope of success to be interesting no matter how you would define success for yourself. It is, after all, a personal choice.

Interview dress code - you don't have to wear it everyday, but your care shows in the good fabric. The clothes should be comfortable, not only 'smart' (what would quotient be, should you be stiff like a broomstick?) ::-)

teresapelka, good observations. However, the dress code would vary according to what kind of work. For a job in a blue collar factory job, clean work clothes might be best.I have myself made the mistake of being over dressed for such jobs. Stiffness would not be advisable. It would be best to be confident and relaxed. I appreciate you comments.

My favorite: “Nobody cleared a path for themselves by giving up.” Alicia Bessette

That should be taped to every writer's computer screen, right at the top! Thanks for the encouragement, Don. Voted up and shared.

You have included most of my favorite success quotes here, Don. Here is one more I think you will appreciate:

"If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then give up. There's no use in being a damn fool about it." - W.C. Fields (He did know how to make a point!)

My thoughts are, so far as I am concerned, that when interviewing I try to appear and act like a "me" that "I" would think others would find acceptable. When it comes to success, "I" try to be "me" as much as possible, since my thinking is that if "I" can not succeed as myself I stand far less a chance of succeeding as someone or something that another thinks I "should" be or do. Furthermore, if "I" got hired, I must be succeeding as "myself", even if I am trying to make it presentable to those who are not me. Then again, I am an individualist who strongly believes in that philsophy being part and parcel to the success behind the American dream.

drjb, There is certainly something to the idea of not pursuing something to futility. At times one needs to look over whether a new approach might be better. Thanks for commenting and the new quote.

Mandrake, I agree that you should be yourself. However, in things like interviews one has to project an image. Some of that is to know how to dress appropriately and so on. usually the interviewer is looking to see if you fit into his or her organization. You are a stranger, so they can only go by such things as how you dress, talk etc. For most of us, especially when we are young and inexperienced, we do not know what they are looking for. It matters less if you are in an occupation where they need you more than you need them, such as engineering.

Anyhow, what you are doing seems to work for you. Thanks for commenting.

I like quotations, and learned quite a few new ones, reading this enjoyable hub. I especially liked, “Try not to become a man of success but rather to become a man of value.” Albert Einstein (1879-1955)” Interesting! :-)

Hi Genna, I find it enjoyable to pick out quotes and use them like this in a hub. Einstein was not only intelligent but he was wise as well. Thanks for commenting.

dahoglund - I with you on this. What I am seeing right now on the political scene is that we have a Chief Executive who denigrates those who are successful and obviously thinks that every one deserves a trophy just for showing up. That isn't what Woody Allen was speaking of. First, you have to show up then you have to be willing to do the work to smell the roses. Our youth are being given the wrong signal many times. While it might be well intentioned, everyone isn't always a winner. Many times you find successes through failures.

Hi Frog, partly what I like about some sayings is the various views that people have. In my younger days I belonged to some organizations but was shy and did not feel particularly accepted. Later on I would meet these same people and they acted sincerely like they knew me.Why, because I was at the meeting etc even if I didn't stand out. The same for school etc. That is why I remember Woody Allen's statement.

I agree with you on the political side. The chief seems to be not showing up. not at security briefings, not when our embassy is attacked. There was a saying in the 1950s "out to lunch"

@dahoglund

I want to amend, if was not clear - I didn't mean the 'smart' dress code. I meant the care in the good fabric - the matter you take to make clothes.

You say,

'For a job in a blue collar factory job, clean work clothes might be best.I have myself made the mistake of being over dressed for such jobs.'

I meant you could wear plain work clothes, but if you get a natural fabric uniform to fit you like a glove, you're more likely to win the interview.

I meant - good fabric, not necessarily 'smart'. :)

Excellent piece and marvelous quotations. My entertainer brother has often said he's the luckiest man in the world because he's doing exactly what he wants to when he goes to work. My career has been wide and varied but has always been something I enjoyed -- even ironing way back when. Super Hub! Best/Sis

I have a few adages of my own which have guided my life to this point...."Suck on a pipe long enough and something will come through it." "Never discount the role satisfaction plays in your sense of success. At the same time never assume that success will bring satisfaction." "Never go to the back of the cave to see the bats if there are some hanging around out front." That last one says that we should never intentionally make things more difficult than necessary. Lastly, always remember, "The worst time to teach fire safety is when the building is already burning down." Anyone finding themselves in that situation is attempting to do what is right long after the time that it was necessary. Good work here, Don....a life lesson for us all. Thanks for sharing it! ~WB

Hi Wayne, I like this one--"Never discount the role satisfaction plays in your sense of success. At the same time never assume that success will bring satisfaction." Depending on how success is defined. If success is thought of only as gaining materiel possession, satisfaction is probably short lived. Thanks for contributing.

Love every single quote in your Hub! They all appeal to me and they all challenge me to live life to the fullest.

The fitting in part is very interesting. I moved from Holland to Spain for not fitting in and have intensified my quality of life since I live here.

I found true peace, my lovely future husband, a silly job and wonderful friends. Success came with a major change based on nothing more than a premontion.

I felt I could fit in perfeclty in the Spanish way of life....

Great hub! Voted up, shared and hit some buttons!

dahoglund profile image

dahoglund 3 years ago from Wisconsin Rapids Author

Escoban, glad you liked the quotes. The fitting in pr is something that recently occurred to me. When we fill out an application or submit a resume, we are presenting an image of ourselves and to be most useful the image should be one of a person who fits into the image the company has of itself. If a person wants a job in an art department, it probably would not be wise to show up in a pinstripe suit. likewise if they want a job in a securities company they would want to dress conservative. Thanks for your observations.
