Inspirational Quotes about Teachers, Trainers and Educators

I had been training business skills for five years and I thought I was really great at it! People seemed to love my training and it felt good. Until one day when I read a Tiger comic strip by the late Bud Blake. It took me less than a minute to read and I realised I had no right to call myself a trainer and was seriously depressed for weeks.

Tiger, a young boy is talking to a friend about his dog, Stripe (in the pic above),

and he says, “I taught Stripe how to whistle.”

His friend replies, “I don’t hear him whistling.”

Tiger, with a disgusted look on his face, responds,

“I said I taught him. I didn’t say he learned."

Wow! From thinking I was the best to knowing I was the worst in one-minute flat! It showed me exactly what I had been doing; how naïve I had been. I hadn't really cared if the delegates had learned or were applying the new skills as long as I had done my job of teaching them. I hadn't realised that it was when they learned - when the dog could whistle - that I would feel the real reward. The fulfilling of purpose.

Over many years I have developed and continue to develop my skills as a trainer, facilitator, business coach and life coach. It’s become a large part of my life’s purpose to help others grow and I get an enormous amount of satisfaction from doing so. I have also come to respect and be inspired by many other teachers and trainers who selflessly dedicate themselves to educating and helping others.

So, with this in mind, I would like to share some of my favourite quotes on the subject. Enjoy, and I hope to hear you whistling!

The teacher who is indeed wise does not bid you to enter the house of his wisdom but rather leads you to the threshold of your mind.  Kahlil Gibran

It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.  Albert Einstein

You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can live by
And so become yourself
Because the past is just a good bye.

Teach your children well,
Their father's hell did slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picked, the one you'll know by.

Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

And you, of tender years,
Can't know the fears that your elders grew by,
And so please help them with your youth,
They seek the truth before they can die.

Counter Melody To Above Verse:
Can you hear and do you care and
Cant you see we must be free to
Teach your children what you believe in.
Make a world that we can live in.

Teach your parents well,
Their children's hell will slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picked, the one you'll know by.

Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

The aim of education should be teaching us how to think, rather than what to think. James Beatti

The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught, as that every child should be given the wish to learn. John Lubbock

Those who educate children well are more to be honoured than parents, for these only gave life, those the art of living well. Aristotle

It is paradoxical that many educators and parents still differentiate between a time for learning and a time for play without seeing the vital connections between them.  Leo Buscaglia

You teach best what you most need to learn. Richard Bach

If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea. Antoine Saint-Exupery

Change is the end result of all true learning. Leo Buscaglia

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education. Martin Luther King Jr.

Too often we underestimate the power of touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. Leo Buscaglia

When you teach your son, you teach your son's son. The Talmud

One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child. Carl Jung

It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge. Albert Einstein

If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn. Ignacio Estrado

Beautiful Quotes - Teaching can be a wonderful experience when done from the heart. It's more than a job. :)

Thanks Lady E. Yes, if it's not from the heart then it becomes a chore, a job. Thanks for your comments. Russ

Morning Russ...Wonderful and inspirational quotes ...The teaching experience not only seeks to educate and motivate students, but it also teaches the teacher life lessons...

I taught Latin and US History years ago and have never forgotten the innate curiosity and enthusiasm of my students...I have tried over the years to maintain that same curiosity and enthusiasm with life that they so naturally possessed...Its kept me young, optimistic, and intellectually engaged in my autumn years...

If I had to use one word to describe a full and healthy life I would say " Enthusiasm "...One of my favorite quotes was by Winston Churchill when he said " I always like a man that smiles when he is in a fight "...Enthusiasm in learning, workplace, or family is contagious and reflects positive vibes to those it touches...

On that note, I enthusiastically give two thumbs up and a " beautiful " to your wonderfully chosen quotations, the interesting introduction, and the accompanying pics...Go well my friend...Larry

Hi Larry, thank you so much. It's obvious that once again, you've 'got it'. I so often gain inspiration from the student's enthusiasm. Stay well my friend. Russ

Nice hub Russ. I wish my own teachers, long long ago, had your above rules to live by. I never felt encouraged to be creative, and due to a humiliating experience very young in my school life, ended up with a learning impairment in math. Teachers have a huge responsibility to inspire, nurture and motivate young minds. There is no doubt your vocation has to have heart and a wanting to make a difference.

Everything is encompassed in this one quote:

"The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught, as that every child should be given the wish to learn."

Well done and I loved the very effective introduction

Hi Jewels, lovely to see you here. Thanks for stopping by and for your comments. You seem to be as passionate about this as I am. It does set one up for life and it seems crazy that much, much more emphasis isn't given to preparing people for life, teaching them how to think, how to learn, how to relate to one another, etc. Thank goodness for the few exceptional people that fight the odds, break the rules and do make it happen.

"Change is the end result of all true learning." Buscaglia often manages to put his finger exactly on the spot, doesn't he?

This is an awesome Hub, Russ, and I hope you won't mind if I link it to mine on experiential learning?

Love and peace

Tony

My favorite quote is "We learn by teachin". It is so true. Everytime I step foot into my classroom I learn something from one of the children in it. I loved your story in the beginning about "I taught but I didn't say he learned" We can only try to teach and keep a sense of humor about it all.

Hi, and thank you. I can see you are a teacher at heart and I agree that it's so important to keep a sense of humour about it. Russ

Russ - thank you for this - a truly great hub - these quotes -( I won't mention any one in particular because they are ALL so wonderful) - uplift, enlighten and educate. I was invigorated actually by them all. Thank you.

Having been a teacher once long ago I discovered (after a few years) that my pupils and I were on a journey TOGETHER in OUR learning - and in fact I'm not so sure they got the best deal! Thanks again Russ - you are a great teacher!

Hi Amorea, Thank you, I was touched by your comments. Yes, it is absolutely a journey together in learning - so few people actually get that! And what's also very important is the teacher's humility, which you show in abundance. Much appreciated comments. Russ

This is such an excellent hub. You should be training teachers! If teachers got this kind of training there would be so many wonderful students thirsty to learn. I waltzed on your buttons. :D

Oh, and all these comments, so much truth in them all, I read them all and was very impressed by each one. Some pretty great people here! :D
