LPN Programs in Georgia

Identifying approved LPN Programs in the state of Georgia is challenging if you don't know where to look. Instead of searching for schools one at a time and verifying their status, you can use this article as a resource for finding state approved schools offering an active practical nursing program.

In addition to providing some details about the school, you will find some recent licensing exam passage rates for students in each program as well. Be careful about how you interpret this data (single students can have a disproportionately large impact on the exam passage rates if the overall class size is small), but it is often a pretty good indicator of the program quality prospective students could expect. As a general rule, a higher percentage of students successfully passing the licensing exam is an indicator of a high quality LPN program.

How to Select a Program

With so many schools offering a practical nursing program, how do you decide which is right for you? While the program quality should always be taken into consideration, location should not be far behind on your list of priorities. While many schools offer some online classes, a Licensed Practical Nursing program requires part of the training to take place in a live clinical setting where you can work with real patients. Selecting a school that is close by and convenient will definitely help to lower your stress level and improve your odds of success as you work your way towards completing your coursework.

Next, it is highly recommended that you visit the website of the school or schools you have an interest in and request an information packet. All approved programs will offer this information free of charge and it will give you some insight into class scheduling and availability, financial aid, campus layout, parking, and an overview of what to expect. Through this process, you will likely make contact with an academic advisor who can answer any specific questions you may have. Just like visiting a major college or university, this experience will give you a wealth of information and make it easier to decide on a specific program.

Starting Your Career as an LPN

A typical training program lasts approximately one year. Upon completion of an approved LPN program, the next step is to pass the NCLEX exam. This is the standard test all nurses must pass before being allowed to practice in the United States. There are two versions, the NCLEX-RN and the NCLEX-PN. The NCLEX-PN is the exam that students must pass to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. Once you are formally licensed, you can begin looking for work in a hospital, clinic, or long-term care facility.

An entry-level nurse can expect to earn between $35,000 and $45000 per year depending on the employer. After gaining some experience and developing a history of reliable performance, an LPN can earn more than $55,000 per year. Due to the high demand for qualified nurses, advancement opportunities abound and many licensed practical nurses go on to RN programs as their careers develop. The employment outlook for nurses is very positive with double-digit growth forecast over the next five to ten years.
