Let's talk about....Stun Guns

5 Commonly Asked Questions About Stun Guns

What is a stun gun?

A stun gun is a type of electronic device that uses electricity to control a person. Stun guns are battery powered and come in two major types. The first type is a hand held stun gun, known hereafter as stun guns. Hand held stun guns use high voltage and low amperage to temporarily disable an attacker. Stun guns don't rely on pain, rather they dump all of their power into the muscles of the body causingthem to work overtime. This depletes the body of energy and keeps an attacker from doing much of anything for a while. A Taser is another type of electronic control device but it differs from a stun gun in several ways.

A Taser stun gun, hereafter known as a Taser works under the same principles as a stun gun. It too causes the muscles to work overtime and depletes the body of energy. The Taser works by shooting two darts at a target that can penetrate up to two inches of clothing. The Taser then blasts 50,000 volts of electricity down the wires, however, only about 5,000 volts affects the target. Not only does this have the effects of a hand held stun gun, but a Taser also interferes with the brain's ability to communicate with the muscles of the body. What this means is that even if an opponent wanted to do something, they literally could not.

Can stun guns electrocute people?

In short, no.  While numbers like 950,000 or 300,000 volts are impressive, the reall stopping power comes from the amps of an electronic control device.  A single amp is enough to kill someone.  AED's use up to 500 millipamps to shock the heart back into rhythm.  Stun guns use 3-4 milliamps to stop an attacker.  Sot it's way below the threshold needed to cause the heart to beat irregularly much less what's needed to kill someone.

A closely related question regards water.  You would have to have a little care when you use a contact stun gun and the other person is wet, or you are.  The water may conduct the current to you.  Really though, that's not likely to happen.  Likewise, somebody asked if dropping a stun gun in a tub would electrocute someone.  It's obvious they'd never seen a stun gun before, much less handled it.  There's a trigger you actually have to depress in order to activate the stun gun.  So as soon as you stopped depressing the trigger, the stun gun would turn off.

Do you need a license to carry a stun gun?

This is probably one of the more common questions out there.  In places where it's legal to own stun guns, no you don't need a conceal carry license or anything like that.  Now there are places stun guns are illegal.  It's crazy to think that some places won't allow something as effective and safe as a stun gun to be carried or owned by citizens.  The ATF also doesn't consider Taser products to be firearms because they use compressed nitrogen to fire the darts, not explosives, so you're covered there.

Do keep in mind that you can be charged with assault if you use a stun gun inappropriately.  Much like using any other weapon, you will be charged if it is not used to keep yourself or someone else from harm.

How fast does a stun gun work?

In less than a second, a victim will be startled, some shock pain will be evident and a little muscle contration.  In a second of contact, muslces will start to spasm and the victim will be slightly dazed.  After three seconds of contact, the victime will start to lose their balance, they will lose muscle control and become totally dazed and disoriented.  The higher the voltage the faster the effects.

Can I travel with a stun gun?

You are allowed to take a stun gun with you when you board an airplane, but it must be in checked baggage.  Do keep in mind that if there place to which you are travelling has laws against the posession of stun guns, then you might find yourself in court.

Thanks for the really good information on stun guns and tasers. Have you used a taser before? Does it have any kind of recoil? How easy/difficult is it to aim?

No I haven't had to use a Taser on someone nor have I had to use a stun gun before. One of the lesser known beneifts of martial arits training is that you learn to avoid questionable activities and thus there's less of a chance of becoming a victim of a crime. You can't predict crazy, however, so it's best to be prepared, just in case.

The recoil off of a Taser is much like that of a BB gun. The darts are propelled via a gas cartridge much like a BB gun, so it's nothing like firing a handgun. As for the aim, there is an option to buy an led light, kind of like a laser dot to help you aim. The only drawbacks to that is that is costs about $50 more and you have to get a Taser with the sight integrated, you can't buy a sight later and install it in your C2.

Also when you consider the fact that many confrontations happen within 10 feet and the C2 has an effective range of 15 feet, aiming won't be much of a problem. Just aim at the center mass. Even if you do miss, the C2 also acts as a contact stun gun, so you're never out of options when you use a C2. Good questions, if you have any more, just ask.

Tasers should be banned completely.  As of March. 24, 2009 there has been 351 deaths do to the over use of Tasers by police officers in the U.S. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29865217/

In Canada there has been over 100 deaths attributed to the over use of Tasers by police officers.  Four cops in Vancouver, BC may eventually have to stand trial for murder do to the over use of Tasers.  They should have to stand trial for murder.

This over use of power needs to end. We are not living in pre-world war II Germany.

You're off base, Mike. Do yourself a favor and at least check out the research done on Tasers at: http://bit.ly/hJwgt. Taser, the Department of Justice, the police of Nova Scotia and British Columbia, to name a few, have done studies on the technology behind Tasers and their effect on the human body. What would you rather have had those officers do? Shoot the kid? As for your comments on pre-war Germany, don't be a fool. As usual the report doesn't say anything about the call that brought officers to the scene. Don't you think that might be important? Also the kid was either fighting or getting ready to fight the officers. What would you do in that situation? Would you enjoy beating down a kid with your baton or shooting him? Yes, it's sad that this kid died. I worked with kids in the mental health field for seven years. You don't work every day with them and not get attached to them. One of the lessons I tried very hard to impart to them was that actions have consequences, so you have to be careful and make the right decisions. Some times the consequences are grossly unfair, sometimes consequences can kill you. This kid took a gamble and made a bad choice in trying to fight cops. Did it mean that he deserved to die? No. But once you take an action, you don't control the consequences. If this dad loved his son so much, why didn't he teach his son that? If I come across as angry, it's because I don't appreciate your insinuation that I advocate the use of tools that will murder people. The interesting thing over the fervor in which the press attacks the use of Tasers is that not one civilian model has been shown to kill anyone. Strangely enough, no news report ever mentions that. I guess real news like that doesn't sell papers or get eyes glued to the screen.

Are Stun Guns legal to carry in every state and across state lines?

ledefensetech profile image

ledefensetech 7 years ago from Cape Girardeau, MO Author

I'm afraid not. You can find a list of state laws here: https://www.ledefensetech.com/stungunlaws.htm

You may also have to check and see if there are any local ordnance against the use or possession of stun guns. Generally speaking state law supersedes local law, but there may be a city or two in states where it is otherwise legal to buy and possess stun guns that might make it illegal to carry or own within the city limits.

Tamarii2, good info you shared. A couple Christmases ago I bought my daughters and grown granddaughters all a stun gun for Christmas - just in case. Two of them worked night shifts...We talked about Tasers but they were much more expensive than the stun guns. Also FYI, I could not get your link to the stun gun laws site to work; might have been on my side. At any rate, thanks for this great hub!

Oops. The site is not secure so omit the s from https. The correct address is:

Thanks for pointing that out FF. About stun guns vs Tasers, well you're right about the price, but were you aware of Taser's replacement policy? If you use one of their tools on someone they want you to put it on the ground and walk away. Just send them a copy of the police report and they'll replace your Taser for free. In addition, there's something to be said for keeping your assailant at a distance. Given a choice I'd like to be able to engage them at as far a distance as possible. That way your options are as open as possible in that kind of a situation.

I own a Zap Stun Gun model #Zap950. It is rather small, slightly smaller than a pack of cigarettes, and it packs 950,000 volts.

While the stopping power may mostly relate to the amps. I can tell you from test firing this, on no one, just to see what it did that 950k volts is very, very loud and intimidating. Enough so that I think most would turn around and leave you alone after hearing it. I know I would if the tables were turned.

While a taser may be better for keeping them at a distance I prefer my stun gun because it's so small, very loud and can be used over and over if needed by only replacing the three 3 volt lithium batteries. Thankfully I have never had to use it yet.

For a self defense weapon, a stun gun or a taser should be on top of the list. This is a non-lethal weapon and this should be used primarily by the police. All necessary questions regarding stun guns and tasers which requires an answer is categorically and correctly answered through this hub. Thanks a lot.

Stun guns(not Tasers) do not always create the desired effect. There are many YouTube videos where people shock themselves with stun guns for a gag.

I was talking to some professionals whom say that OC Pepper Spray is much more effective.

If anyone is looking for a place to not only find current laws on owning a stun gun but where or where you cant own one. Goto http://www.stun-gun.net they also carry the Taser gun, that if you dont have a criminal background can be purchased for civilian home protection. Just a little up-to-date info, oh and they got great prices too! :)

Safetycorpgroup 6 years ago

Before I ever started selling personal safety devices I had a security job the company wanted their people to carry pepper sptay and stun guns but to be able to use them you had to get zapped first, something like police departments do with Tasers they usually have to know the feeling of getting Tazed.I can't say that I was in extreme pain from the stun gun considering I knew it was coming, but if done by surprise from an attacker I think its plenty enough juice to have the chance to get away and get help.

I am new to the business of selling stun guns. Just wanted to know if i need a license to do so. Please tell me if anyone knows.

Can i get a stun gun that the shocking can be used from a distance?

You can conceal a stun gun (like that new pen) legally without a permit right? I know I'm paranoid but i would like to know if you can carry one around concealed without

a permit and its not the law you cant right? I'm probably very paranoid.
