The Key to Setting Goals

How are you doing on your New Years Resolutions and Goals? The New Year has come and gone - Are you still on track? To many of us make grand resolutions and forget our goals by the end of January or soon after!

What are the keys to setting and keeping goals?

Once you have set your Goal or Resolution you will need a plan of action. Small steps to reach the desired outcome. Goals not written down with a date to be completed, are only a dream. Be clear and specific using daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly steps to achieve your goal. Instead of saying I want to lose weight quick, set a goal of how much you will lose per week and the steps you will take to do it with a deadline date for each step. Don't become overwhelmed, by taking on to many goals at once.

Use a notebook to record your plan along with thoughts and feelings with each step. Put your goals in plain view for you to read them daily. Plan a time to reassess your goals making sure your on target. Be accountable to someone you trust. It may be hard at first but after a few weeks or months it will become a positive habit. It takes practice to set and accomplish goals. Be sure to include your children - teach them by example how to set and keep goals - think of what they can accomplish by the time they become adults.

See your goal accomplished in your mind, and your feelings of joy. Talk positive, instead of saying - I will stop eating junk food, change it to - I love eating healthy food.

Don't be to hard on yourself, if you fall short of the complete goal, remember everyone wants to be on top of the mountain - when the true growth comes from climbing it. Each goal step achieved gives you improved self esteem and the confidence to undertake bigger goals. Acknowledge and be proud of each effort.

Set Realistic Goals - with a realistic time frame. Nothing slows you down faster than little success. When weeding a garden it's always best to look back at how far you've come and not how much you have left to go. Goals can lead to better health, increased income, better relationships, self improvement and more. I love the children's book on the little train "I think I can, I think I can, I know I can" A positive attitude is a must with goal setting. You never fail until you stop trying.

It doesn't have to be the New Year to set goals, it could be your birthday or another date, practice goal setting all year round, it won't take long for you to become an expert at improving all areas of your life.
