Ashford University's Stipend Policy and More - Is it for you?

Adult Continuing Education

Adult Education On-line

For many workers who have been displaced by the economic downturn, and have seen their salary or retirement income slashed or who fear the worst is yet to come, going back to school at Ashford University is looking more and more appealing. I have been there and I can tell you that at the age of 43 I did not want this to happen. However, with over 18 years in Corporate America, and 12 years of Entrepreneurship to my credit, I found myself out of sync with the economic recession that we have undergone in the last several years.

In response, on-line universities, professional organizations and everything in between are expanding their course offerings and retooling their curriculum's. Therefore, going back to school is easier and more affordable today than ever. The federal stimulus program and local government initiatives have helped fuel a surge of courses and of students. This makes it near impossible to filter through all of the on-line colleges and degree programs offered.

However, there are a few resources that should help you define exactly the type of program that you need or want to study. To help workers figure out which positions and skill sets are most in demand and best for them, the Department of Labor maintains the O*Net Web site, which has a vast database of information about jobs within each industry. It shows which are in highest demand, what kind of training; work experience and education are typical for each position, the expected salary and other information. There is even a way to search for jobs by the skills they require (for example, skills of persuasion, knowledge of systems analysis, fluency in Microsoft Excel and so on).

Going Back To School

Ashford University

After personally contacting 35 of the top on-line colleges, I chose Ashford University because; their college is geared specifically to the adult student. Furthermore, I will receive an accredited degree without the designation on my diploma as an On-Line College (That was very, very important to me). What does this mean you ask? I am considered a virtual student and may attend and participate in my graduation at the college which is located in Clinton, Iowa.

Whether this is your first time going to college or a returning student you will find that you are transitioned into the college lifestyle with care and continuous support. I can balance my busy lifestyle and business with online coursework as I earn my Bachelor's in Accounting, with two minors one in Public Administration and the other in Project Management.

Furthermore, I am given my own personal Student Portal and Backboard that I can access 24/7. I can also get support for any service including access to my professors 24/7 as well. In addition to the above mentioned, I am also given my own personal Enrollment Advisor (Armando Heredia), Academic Advisor (Joyce Yin), and Financial Services Advisor (Dennis Lui). I cannot say enough wonderful things about them or Ashford University.

You'll find Ashford University®, founded in 1918, is an ideal choice for you whether you're a working adult or haven't yet completed your degree. You can count on Ashford University to provide a high-quality degree program that is:

Affordable

Benefit from one of the lowest program costs available online. Bachelor's courses are $354 per credit, while Master's courses start at $463 per credit.

Accelerated

Depending on the number of any applied transfer credits, you may be able to finish your degree program in as few as 12 months. Classes are 5-6 weeks and are taken one at a time. Plus, you can transfer up to 99 approved credits toward your Bachelor's degree.

Convenient

Enjoy the flexibility of online courses 24 hours a day. Online classes are asynchronous, so like with email, you can login anytime to participate and post your work in class.

Call Armando Heredia, who is my personal Enrollment Advisor at 800.798.0584 x2467 today and tell him Katie sent you!

Financial Aid – How it works

Money for College

You may think that this is going to be a difficult road to travel upon. However, much to my surprise this was the easy part of the entire process. I personally applied for and received the full Pell Grant along with the Federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. The Loans do not need to be repaid until 6 months after I graduate and the Pell Grant never needs to be repaid. Therefore, I received $ 9,500.00 in Federal Loans and $ 5,350.00 for the Pell Grant yearly (as long as I qualify). I receive a Stipend check, approx. every three months, from Ashford University for the unused portion of my Pell Grant. This works out really well because I can use that money for anything I require. (Examples, school supplies, books, or anything else I wish to purchase with it.)

3 Steps to Appling for Financial Aid.

  1. Step 1 – Get your Income Tax Paperwork together and Apply for your PIN - Go to the link on the right to Apply.
  2. Step 2 – Apply for your Free Financial Aid and use Federal School Code: 001881 for Ashford University
  3. Step 3 – Follow up and make any necessary changes to your Application -

That is all there is to it!

Financial Aid Stipend Money Coming At You!

Ashford University Stipend Check Policy

I have received a lot of questions concerning Ashford University's Stipend Check Process:

So here Goes:

You Will receive an email entitled: Financial Aid Award Letter

In that E-mail will be the amounts that you are awarded as well as when the amounts will become available to you.

  • Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan 06/16/2009 $ 0.00
  • Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan 06/16/2009 $ 0.00
  • Pell Grant 07/07/2009 $ 0.00
  • Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan 10/27/2009 $ 0.00
  • Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan 10/27/2009 $ 0.00
  • Pell Grant 10/27/2009 $ 0.00

After charges are paid, if any excess financial aid funds remain on your account, a check for thirty percent (30%) of the excess funds will be mailed to you after successful completion of seven (7) weeks of continuous academic enrollment. The remaining seventy percent (70%) of any excess financial aid funds will be mailed to you after successful completion of fourteen (14) weeks of continuous academic enrollment.

Federal financial aid funds are available to students based on payment periods. This award letter includes funding for the academic year. The estimated disbursement dates and amounts are noted in the chart below. Please note that prior to any disbursement you are required to meet satisfactory academic progress (SAP) standards. For more information on SAP, go to www.ashford.edu. In addition, you are required to reapply for federal financial aid each award year to establish continuing federal financial aid eligibility.

Please note that the following award may be subject to change at the discretion of the financial aid office.

Now for the Real Deal: Being my Pell Grant came after my loans came through, I did not get my first stipend check until 07/24/08. It was delayed by 2 weeks. However, my Financial Advisor jumped right in and made sure that a check was issued ASAP. My second check came in on time 08/26/09.

The next batch of Financial Aid is due to come in on 10/27/09. The clock will not start again until my fifth class, which begins on 10/06/09 and then the seven weeks begin all over again. Hopefully I will not have as much trouble this time around. However, If I do Dennis Lui will be right there fixing it for me again. Your Advisors are always in your corner and will fight for whatever you need.

A College Degree!

College Life

Now, getting back into the swing of college life will be a challenge. However, you are given instructions and support the whole way through. They assist you with everything from college transcripts to giving you a $99.99 coupon towards your first courses books. The classes are, from my experience, 23 to 38 students per course.

You start a new course every 5 weeks. I like to call my courses speed dials, because before you know it they are over. I am going on my 4th class and have a G.P.A. of 3.50.

Do not get me wrong, you must be self motivated and really want your degree in a short period of time. This way of schooling, although convent, is very intense and demands a lot of writing. Moreover, you are learning the course material in 5 weeks verses a 3 month long traditional class. However, as I believe, nothing worthwhile comes easy.

I hope this Hub helps you to branch out, believe, receive, and succeed. If there is any more information that I can help you with, or anything in particular that I have not addressed please feel free to e-mail me.

Thank you for making this site! I am in my second course at Ashford and have just received a stipend check and the info that you provided was very helpful in clarifying future disbursements..I guess that next check is coming right before Christmas...ohhh the temptation:/ What do you do with your stipend checks?

cluense profile image

cluense 5 years ago from Cartersville, GA Author

Katie,

Firstly, I am so glad I could help you through my article. I originally wrote it because no one offered any answers. Secondly, I use my stipend checks for:

1. Future course books and materials from Amazon.com - Never buy a book from the Saints Book store! It is always cheaper on Amazon.com

2. I save half of the remainder for life's many little emergencies.

3. The other half of the remainder usually goes on catching up on bills or the kids needs. (They never stop eating or growing!)

You will find that if you manage your stipend check well you will always have a few extra dollars!

Angel 5 years ago

Thanks for the info! Im currently entering my 7th week at Ashford n just recevied my award letter. I guess my stipend will come soon from what u wrote! Cool I desperately need a lap top! I thought they told me u get half and half though.... o well whatever I get now will help! Hopefully its enough for a laptop! Ty for your reccomendation on the books I will follow your advice! Are you still enrolled?

cluense profile image

cluense 5 years ago from Cartersville, GA Author

Hello Angel,

You are welcome. Yes, I am still enrolled and you should see your first check 7 days after the date stated on your award letter. However, anytime off, scheduling changes (delaying a class), failing a class, and the like will delay your check 5 weeks for each incident.

Also, your first check of the new school year is usually bigger then the second disbursement. They also hold 2 to 3 class payments behind. (ex. Your award letter for the first disbursement is $5,000.00, they will hold back $3,000.00 ect)

Glad I could help!

Hey, can the financial aid money only be applied to tuition expenses, or can it be used for items pertaining to education such as the purchase of a laptop?

hi! I started ashford last year in october and got a check in febuary. now its almost april so will i get my check in the next month?

mrs p 5 years ago

I received my first disbursement on 4/11/11 I was just wondering when will I receive my next disbursement?

cluense profile image

cluense 5 years ago from Cartersville, GA Author

Generally speaking you should have received an award letter e-mailed to you. It would state when you should received your next disbursement. You must allow a full 7 business days for processing. You should be able to see your award letter in your portal, under financial. Hope that helps. Katie

will I get an email or something telling me a stipend check is heading my way?

cluense profile image

cluense 5 years ago from Cartersville, GA Author

Ryan,

You will receive an e-mail stating what you were approved for, when it should be disbursed to you, and then check you portal on that date to see if the money was sent out to you. You can now have your stipend checks Direct deposited to your bank now. It just started last week. Go to your portal, under finances, and sign-up! Hope that helps! Katie

I have been with Ashford for 3 years. My pell was taken away from me; I appealed and won. $255.00. There was a time when I would receive $2500.00 this week and a few weeks later I would receive $3000 on my stipend. The cost of tuition has gone up so much. I have already been excepted in a Master Program at another college after I am done with Ashford. You can not make anything lower than a B in the college that I will be going to in the fall. I love the school. I have been able to learn at my pace and spend time with my family. I have also referred three friends to the college.

Hello Faith,

I know what you mean! College tuition is going up and assistance is going down! The requirements are getting tougher and tougher to qualify for a Pell Grant. Scholarships are disappearing and the government assistance programs are almost non-existent!

However, one must do what one must do to achieve a higher-level of education! I applaud your graduating AU and furthering your education with a Masters! I know you can keep your grades up and you will go far! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

My question is a stipend check part of my unsbsidize and subsidize loan?

cluense profile image

cluense 5 years ago from Cartersville, GA Author

Tabbath,

A stipend check is the remaining amount that is left over from your Unsubsidized, Subsidized, and Pell grants. What they do is take out any fees or current amount you owe, deduct for 3 classes and you receive the amount that is left over. Hence, a stipend check.

Hope that helps,

Cluense,

You did a helpful contribution to me and I am sure to many by this site! We all know about the reputation and level of Ashford University but you have explained it very well that now even few of the hesitations are clear. However, I wanted to know about the books for my niece as recently he has joined Ashford. As you said not to buy from Saint Book Store so I am just expecting a better name from where I should recommend him.

I have been at Ashford since 2008. I completed my BA in Psychology in August and began my MATLT program Aug. 30th. I have received regular stipends all the time enrolled. If you have an economic hardship you can circumvent the 30/70 policy by submitting a hardship request. You will then receive 100% of your stipend within 14 days. I just recently signed up for Direct Deposit and my stipend of $5609.00 was released today but in the student portal direct deposit page it still has not been credited for deposit. How long after the stipend is cut does it take to get credited for direct deposit?

Amanda 5 years ago

I received my grant and loans on September 13. Ashford showed a stipend payment on September 20. It didn't show up on Sallie Mae's ledger until this morning as pending. Hopefully it will be in the bank tomorrow.

Hope that helps!

shay 5 years ago

On the website does it actually say stipend payment?

Shka 4 years ago

I have received my award letter about a month ago , it does not give a disburstment date. I was told that my disburstment date was suppose to have been on the the 13th of October but nothing is showing on my portal. What the heck is going on. I HAVE never had this much trouble with my previous universiy.

SmarttChick 4 years ago

Just a quick note: all schools refund leftover student loan money - that's federal law.

Also, keep in mind that it's not *free* and is a loan that you will have to pay back, after graduation, whether you have found a job or not. Sometimes the better option is to tell the Financial Aid office to please return the funds to the lender, so your total debt upon graduation (or separation from school - you owe either way), is as small as possible.

It is also important to understand that you cannot discharge student loans in bankruptcy; they will follow you to your grave, and in fact, your social security stipend can be withheld to pay your outstanding students loans.

The student loan crisis is reaching record proportions, as this article points out: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43584744/ns/business-p...

Forewarned is forearmed on these issues!!

Michael Nez 4 years ago

Very informative website. Just reading the post has giving me faith that I will receive my stipend soon. It has been 7 business days and I have received nothing. Does it come by FEDEX or UPS? I live in a trailor park with a roommate who does not have a mailbox out here. So they must deliver this kind of mail to my door correct?

cluense profile image

cluense 4 years ago from Cartersville, GA Author

Hello Michael,

They deliver your check to the address you have registered with the college via USPS. It comes in the regular mail delivery. So, however you receive your regular mail is how it will come. For example, if the mail person normally knocks on your door (because you do not have a mail box) then that is how it will be delivered, unless you signed up for direct deposit with your bank.

HM 4 years ago

Okay if the 30/70 thing is how it takes place, then how come Ashford doesn't tell it's students about that? I'm not trying to be difficult but my enrollment advisor and student/financial advisor both told me that I had to check off whether I want to give Ashford permission to hold my fasfa beyond the 14 day mark (for what was left over after they took out their money). I know that I did not give Ashford longer than 14 days to hold my stipend, in fact I know I checked off on the paper that I wanted my stipend sent to me after the 14 days were up. Like I said, I'm not trying to be difficult, but I am wondering what's the point in that paper if they have no intention of honoring their agreement...

BenE 4 years ago

I've had trouble with Ashford's finance department, both in getting money from them and paying them. They're really quick to demand immediate payment while taking forever to process a check meant for you. A quick look on Linked-In shows that a lot of their "student advisors" have solid background in debt collections.

AM 3 years ago

I can honestly admit that my enrollment was a long, drawn out thing, but it was through no fault of Ashford or the staff. My enrollment adviser was AMAZING, in fact, if it weren't for Julia, I honestly don't know if I would have ever been able to repay my previous student loans before I was 80, let alone to return to school to pursue my masters degree! Now, in terms of the finance department.... there have been changes that many are unaware of. The role of the financial department the school (at least for online, anyway) and the role of the academic adviser are now one. As adults we all know change is not always a bad thing, but with all change comes the need to adjust, adapt if you will, before moving forward. I too had trouble with the financial department, but it was a short delay. As many have mentioned, the school has 14 days to release any excess funds to students or to return it to the lender, depending on which option the individual student selected at enrollment. It is a federal LAW and therefore an offense if such is not the case, but allow adequate time and ask questions first, then if the issue is still left unresolved, then by all means, proceed to handle your business so you can stay on track with your educational goals :) For any services rendered or merchandise received in any other instance, payment or prearranged agreement is due upon receipt, is it not? Why would it be any different with a university? Again, ask questions and don't "assume" a problem is rectified if you are not sure.

According to the new set of rules that they have in place, the date they give you is an estimated date. It could and does take about seven business days (do not include week days or holidays) to have your check issued. Once your check is actually issued, it would take three days for direct deposit or seven days for a paper check to arrive in the mail. Hope this helps, If not call your Financial Adviser (I can never get a hold of mine), If that does not work, go straight to the financial department (this has worked for me in the past)!

cluense 3 years ago from Cartersville, GA Author

I have no doubt about that you say is correct. This was not the case when I first started in 2009. However, their parent company is Bridgeport education which is a publicly traded company. Also; they have grown so large I believe they are in catch up mode. However, this is the only on-line program that does not say on your diploma that you graduated from an On-line college. So, I guess we must take the bad with the good sometimes! Sorry for your problems Ronda. When I had an issue I e-mailed the president of the college myself. I got results in less than 10 minutes and that is no lie! Take your issue to the top and watch the rest rush around getting your issue resolved. Do not get mad, Get answers!!!! I hope this helps you! If you need more info just message me and I will show you how to get this fixed quickly, quietly, and from a position of power!

HELLO I'M NEW TO THIS SITE BEEN WITH ASHFORD SINCE NOV 13 2012 AND JUST RECEIVE A EMAIL THAT STIPEND IS READY FROM SALLIE MAE I OPT FOR 100% AND MY FUNDS THAT WERE LEFTOVER WAS 1449 HOW MUCH AM IM GETTING I WAS APPROVED FOR THE 9500 AND 5500 PELL GRANT DO I GET A SECOND CHECK OR WHAT!!!!!!!!!!

cluense profile image

cluense 3 years ago from Cartersville, GA Author

If your stipend is ready it will take 2-3 days to appear in your bank account if you chose Direct Deposit. It will take up to 14 days if you opted for a paper check. You get two checks a school year. The first check is usually smaller then the second check. Also; you receive only a portion of the Financial Aid as a stipend because, they take out the money to cover four classes. Go to your Financial tab, account, and you will see that your account ledger shows that you were charged for four classes. I hope this helps, Cluense

anishav 3 years ago

YES I RECEIVED MY FIRST CHECK OF 1439 AND DID A HARDSHIP REQUEST FOR THE 100% SO WILL I RECEIVE A 2ND CHECK ALSO ALL MY LOANS WERE PAID AND THE TOTAL AMOUNT THAT IS LEFT OVER IS 8,000 HOW DO THIS WORK I QUALIFIED FOR THE MAX IN LOANS AND GRANTS.

anishav 3 years ago

FOUND OUT THAT WILL NOT STOP THE SECOND CHECK BECAUSE IT STILL IS OWED TO ME DO THEY HOLD BACK THE FOUR CLASSES FOR THE NEXT 4 CLASSES AS WELL

cluense profile image

cluense 3 years ago from Cartersville, GA Author

Yes, each check they deduct four classes. You can check your account and see exactly what your balance is. Also; they can only hold back $250 a school year for back fees. For example, you withdrew from a class after the second week began and now you owe the college for 1/2 the tuition.

anishav 3 years ago

Oh No I never withdrew from class thanks for the heads up I plan on getting my degree so is this check the one that is completion of 14 weeks of class because I heard it is 2 for each set of courses but that is hear say I received a 1439 stipend so did I receive all my funds for the 1st disburstment since I did a hardship request for 100%

anishav 3 years ago

Thanks for everything how long do it take for my 2nd stipend do I have to do 20 weeks just curious because of all the hear say.I was also told 7 weeks 1st disburstment that I received already and 2nd 14 weeks .

cluense profile image

cluense 3 years ago from Cartersville, GA Author

YES, 14-20 weeks sounds about right. I have learned not to depend upon my check arriving on time.

Typo I mean do I have to do a extra 20 weeks of classes in order to receive my second stipend I did the first 7 weeks and received my 1st stipend already, I'm currently in my 11 weeks at school and in my 3rd class.I did a 100% hardship request so will I receive the second stipend

Hello i love your article !! I am just starting @ Ashford University!! I just finished EXP 105 !! I was wondering my Award Letter said that my stripend was supposed to be released on March 19th ! Its now March 31st and i have not getting it !! What should i do ?

cluense profile image

cluense 3 years ago from Cartersville, GA Author

Okay, Firstly, I need to ask, have you altered your schedule any? Because, if you delay, withdraw from a class, or alter your schedule in anyway after you receive your award letter that can delay your stipend check. Also; because so many students are starting college (not always for the right reasons) AU delays the first stipend check until after your first and midway through your second class. So, I would recommend that you call your adviser and inquire what is going on. They will be able to tell you and give you an idea when it will go through. If you cannot get a hold of your adviser, you can always call the finance department. However, I would try your adviser first.

I know from experience that the award date is only an estimated date. It usually comes though two weeks after and then there is a seven business day wait after it shows up in your account (you can find that in the portal, on the left hand side under account). Then if you are having a check disbursement that is another seven day wait. On the other hand, if you are receiving your funds via Direct deposit then it is a three day waiting period before the money appears in your bank account.

I hope this helps you Charity!

Your tutor,

Katie Luense

I know when attended Grand Canyon University my check was released on the 29th of may (last year) and I received it on the 9th of june

Started AShford on 1/15/2013, for a Masters program. I am in my third class I was wondering if the 30% and 70% split still applies or will I get it all in one stipend. By my account I have completed about 17 weeks .

cluense profile image

cluense 3 years ago from Cartersville, GA Author

Charity Keith, It will be 7 business days from its release date! Then another 3 business days for Direct Deposit or another 7 business days for a mailed check.

Sparkle606, your funds will stay the same 30/70 and you usually will see your first check towards the end of your third class. That is dependent upon no course changes or withdrawals from the Award letter date. If you do not see it in your portal, you need to call your financial adviser! Stay on it, it is your money and you have the right to know what is going on!

Shannon Murphy 3 years ago

Today I changed from the 30/7 0 to 100% i'm currently in the 2nd week of my 3rd class my question is when will i receive my stipend i got my 2nd award letter four days ago and also have direct deposit. thank you

sparkle606 3 years ago

I am in the same position. I also changed to 100%. I don't know if that requires an additional 14days. Called my advisor an she was unable to provide me with any further information. It has alreasy been over fourteen days. It seems like a waiting game. I have almost completed my third class, this is my last week.

Shannon Murphy 3 years ago

Wow Sparkle did you hear anything yet

Hi Shannon,

Today it finally showed up in the portal as stipend. Good luck to everyone who is still waiting. Be patient and stay on it. They have to give you information its your money.

That is great news Shannon! You are right about them having to give you information because it is your money. However, over the years the stipend checks have been getting harder to predict when you will receive them. I remember one time, I waited three months for a check. They kept telling me it was on its way. However, they could not tell me when it would be in my portal. Do not give up! Do not give in!

Chasity, You will still receive your 100% but, it will delay your stipend check about 5 weeks. This also occurs when you Withdraw from a class. I learned that one the hard way! Just hang in there and do your best and you will okay!

I'm currently still in the class but my grades are dropping

Cluense,

Could you please help me understand the stipend disbursement better? I will be starting my first class with Ashford University on July 2, 2013. I am opting for 100% disbursement of my stipend funds - can you tell me 1) How these funds will be disbursed (ie: is the amount left over disbursed all at once or is it broken out into payments) and 2) How long does each disbursement take? From what I am reading in these posts I will not see ANY funds until I am in my fourth class (which is mid October to early November) and this is concerning since I will need to have the funds to purchase books and other expenses.

Hi Cluense,

I received an email from SallieMae stating my stipend amount from AU has been issued on 05/24/2013 and it says 7-10 business days for mail delivery. Do I get the amount stated in the email or only 30% im just confused.

RASANT23,

These are the rules:

1. Stipend amount appears in you portal on your student account.

2. That is the exact amount you will receive.

3. It takes 7 business days before the money is disbursed to you.

4. It takes an additional 3 business days to show up in your account if Direct Deposit.

5. It takes an additional 7-10 business days to show up in your mailbox if you want a paper check.

JSircy,

Because of the probationary period has been put it place, you are correct that you will not see your funds until mid-fourth class. However, if you are in a hardship case, you can request a hardship case disbursement from your adviser. Now, being that you are new there are no guarantees that your request will be granted. However, you can ask that your classes be rearranged to reflect the classes that come with the Bridge-point books.

This way you will not have to purchase the books outside of the college to get you started until your stipend funds arrive.

Just a Tidbit of information: Ashford University added the probationary period because of a lot of students enrolling, getting their first stipend check and then quitting. To prevent this, they added the 4 week probationary period to insure that student would not further that practice. I know, this hurts the 90% that are honest and want an education. What can I say, the few make it bad on the many!

RASANT23 3 years ago

Cluense, so the email from SallieMae is incorrect?

JSircy 3 years ago

@ Cluense, I spoke with my academic advisor regarding this. He said that as a new student I should have my stipend money near the end of my second class which would be about the 10 week mark - he said 7 to 9 weeks for them to receive / release the funds and I should have them within 7 days. This is about two months ahead of what others are indicating that I would see the funds during my fourth class... do you think he is being too optimistic? I would rather not set myself up for failure thinking I am expecting the fund and not get them until much later. My academic advisor also explained the reason for the probationary period - just as you stated above that some students were abusing the system and quitting right after they got the money. While this is entirely understandable I don't understand why we have to be penalized? Those students have to repay the money anyways and still don't have an education so they are penalizing not only themselves but us as well.

Do you get a stipend check in the Master Program, if so how long and how much it will be when it sent out?

I was entering my third year in Ashford and I withdrew and there was still half of my financial aid due to post when I did. In my "My Finances" section, it shows money I should be receiving. Will I receive that stippend or will it go back to the lender?

JSircy 3 years ago

Ruffin - my understanding is if you withdraw before the funds are disbursed and posted to your account, Ashford will not draw down the funds which could in essence leave you with a balance owed to the school. My academic advisor is the one who told me this - "you must be in attendance for Ashford to request disbursement of funds." I am in my first year at Ashford - just finishing my second class and not all that happy with my experience thus far. I was going to withdraw thinking that my financial aid would pay for the two classes I've taken and I could just transfer the rest of my aid for the calendar year to another school. She told me it won't work that way - if I withdraw the funds will not be disbursed and I will have to pay for the two classes out of pocket. Honestly, I now understand why they take so long to process the financial aid packets - to lock the student into no less than a semester of classes otherwise face financial aid disaster. It's been a very frustrating experience with Ashford in relation to getting my financial aid package completed. They have reason after reason why it takes this long but from where I'm sitting it looks like nothing more than a bunch of excuses to ensure they get you for four classes worth of tuition before you can transfer elsewhere.

One more thing to note - many people have talked about "hardship" disbursements to get their stipend money quicker - there is no such thing. My home computer died and I request a hardship disbursement so I could purchase a new one. My academic advisor informed me there is no such program and the only thing I could do if I did not have computer / internet access was to request a "break" in between classes until I could solve the problem. Quite disheartening.

Hi, my sallie mae disbursement was on the 27th of september (last month) and on the 11th of this month, stipend appeared in my student account, so it's been about 11 business days so far for processing. So my question is, how long will it take to be mailed to me? I'm not signed up for direct deposit I'll be getting a check. Thanks

Hi,

My time at Ashford has not been as pleasant as yours has been to put it mildly! I graduated from UOP and my time there was wonderful and the transition to Ashford was difficult. with that said I only have 21 credits to go s0 I am praying and trying to get thru ! My question is I see many people mention the 100% hardship clause..I am a single Mom with no family and this has never been mentioned to me by anyone at Ashford ..can someone please advise what it is? Thank you so much!

I funds was added to my account on 11/26/2013 when will I receive my stipend? I requested to get it 100% and direct deposit.

Amanda 2 years ago

So I get the max and this is my first stipend at ashford of only $738. I used to get $3000+ at UoP.. Will my amounts be bigger next time? Wtf? I've just started ashford in nov

Jimmy 2 years ago

Im waiting on my first stipened right now and I asked to have it all sent to me at once. So Amanda you got the first 30% and you'll get your other 70% in 7 weeks.

Ashford's Financial Aid Office is horrible. They over awarded on a stipend (their error). Only after it went to collections and I disputed it was I finally presented with information on where this amount due came from. While still with Ashford every time I called I would get a different reason the amount was due. Now it is with collections and they are going to report even if I make payment arrangements. My credit has to suffer due to Ashford's incompetence. Degree useless, financial aid horrible, advisors even worse. Save yourself the trouble and go elsewhere!
