Earn A College Degree Online For Job Security and Personal Growth

Updated on February 7, 2012

We live in a fast paced world with a competitive job market. The ability to get a decent job, retain that job and advance higher in it, often goes to the employee with the college degree. Online education offers a great opportunity to further your education, learn a trade or earn a  college degree. Whether you have been in the job market for years or have just graduated from high school, online education offers many options that will work around today's busy schedules. The cost of higher education may seem prohibitive, but in reality it is an investment in your future which may well exceed any rewards from a long term investment you could put the same amount of money into. Higher education results in a lifetime of higher earning potential.

Accreditation

The most important thing to consider when looking for an online school is accreditation. You want those credits you work so hard for to be recognized and accepted nationally. Attending an accredited school will insure that the education you receive meets or exceeds the standards set forth by national agencies approved by the Secretary of Education. You can check with the U.S. Department of Education for resources and links to national accrediting agencies. Financial Aid is also available when you attend an accredited school. You can find a list of accredited schools at this link http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation. The U.S. Department of Education calls this the "positive list" of accredited schools approved by the Secretary of Education.

Flexibility

If you are already in immersed in a career, but seek to improve your standing at the company, have an eye on a promotion, or are perhaps thinking of moving into another field, online education may be the right fit for you. Learning at home and earning a college degree online, gives you the flexibility to remain at your job. You can learn at your own pace, study when it's convenient and take on an academic load that works with your goals and time constraints. In these uncertain times of downsizing and layoffs, the more well-rounded you are, the more value you offer as an employee.

Enhance Job Marketablility

You may already have a college degree, or you may not wish to pursue one, but online education can give you proficiency in many areas designed to enhance your job marketability. Classes such as business management, computer applications, and marketing are just a few options available online. These are skills that may secure your place in the company or open doors for advancement. Often education will outweigh experience and qualifications.

Cost Effective

In many cases online classes are more cost effective than traditional classroom learning. Overall tuition is lower and books may not be required, since lessons and classroom materials can be downloaded off the internet. These days, you also need to consider the cost of gas, food and housing if you don't live near a University or College. Sitting at home in the comfort of your living room, you will be learning at your own pace, eating out of your own refrigerator and not spending a dime on gas.

Tuition Rrimbursement

With financial aid packages, you may not need to pay anything until you complete your education. Also many companies offer tuition reimbursement as an incentive to their employees to earn a college degree. These employers recognize the importance of a well educated workforce. If you are one of the many already paying student loans, you will qualify for a deferment while enrolled in school. Be aware though, that the interest payments, even at their low rate, continue to accrue and will be tacked onto the total amount owed.

Returning To The Job Market

A full time job may not be the only reason to avoid returning to school. Having a growing family can make traditional classroom learning difficult or even impossible. With the flexibility online education offers, going back to school while raising the kids is possible. It also serves to keep you informed and prepared to go back to work when the time comes.
