Research and Preparation for a Speech
Research and preparation are the two most important things when it comes to delivering a successful speech. When writing out a speech you must first pick your topic. To determine the topic of your speak you should pick something that you are familiar with. This will help to get you more comfortable and confident about what you are speaking about. Secondly, you must come up with a good research question which will help to guide you through the preparation for the rest of your speech. Your question should be more than a yes or no question, but an open-ended question. The answers that you find for your research questions will become the thesis statement or argument for your entire presentation. Thirdly, you must refine your topic. When beginning to research and write out your speech you must be prepared to accept that the focus of your speech when you finish researching may not be what you wanted or thought was going to be the main focus as when you first started. Lastly, find valuable sources. Libraries happen to be the largest and most reliable source for research materials. Typically, they hold subscriptions to a variety of research databases.
Another useful method of getting information is interviewing. Although, this isn’t completely reliable, we are provided with very valuable information that can be used to help strengthen a speech. The internet is also thought of to be a good source of finding information, however, many times the information we find on the internet may not be as reliable as information found in the library. Websites that typically end in .org or .edu are thought to be more credible while websites ending in .net or .org are thought to be least credible and .com somewhere in the middle. Also, always be sure to site your sources and give credit to whomever you got the information from. If you don’t, you run the risk of being accused of plagiarism.
