Cantopop meets Mandarin RAP
Sammi Cheng (郑秀文） collaborated with MC Hotdog (姚中仁） on a couple songs relatively recently. She is one of the reining queens of Cantonese pop music, but, as most Hong Kong stars do, she has expanded her market by producing some Mandarin songs, as well.
I'm very impressed that she has a beautiful singing voice in both English and Madarin, as well as, her native Cantonese. You can listen to the three videos on this Hub to find this out for yourself. The first two are the same song 信者得爱 in Mandarin and Cantonese. I was intrigued and amused by MC Hotdog trying his hand at Cantonese, as well. The third is an Edison Chen song called, Sandman. In this song, Sammi Cheng only sings in English.
I presume that she collaborated with Edison Chen and MC Hotdog in order to make her image a little more edgy, and they collaborated with her to make their images a little more mainstream.
Edison Chen was officially censured in the mainland, because of a scandal. Some intimate photos of him and some famous actresses went viral on the Internet. So, he was not setting the healthy example that a pop star should. I think he has since been eking out as "bad boy" rapper in Taiwan and other parts of the Chinese speaking world where the censure doesn't apply.
In some of MC Hotdog's songs he is quite critical of Chinese pop music. However, RAP is still not very popular in China. So, presumably Sammi Cheng could help to give his career a boost.
