Celebrating the New Year Since 153 B.C.

The first New Year celebration is thought to have taken place in Rome in the year 153 B.C. New Year's Day is celebrated on January 1 in nearly all countries — the first day of the year in the Julian calendar that was used in ancient Rome, and the first day of the year in the Gregorian calendar. The Gregorian calendar has been adopted by most countries for official, adminstrative, and civil purposes.

Some countries use other calendars for religious purposes, and in those countries New Year's Day falls on other than January 1 when viewed on a Gregorian calendar...Confusing, isn't it?!?

The Russian Orthodox New Year, the Chinese New Year, also called the Lunar New Year, and the Korean New Year are celebrated on days in January other than the 1st. The Persian (Iranian) New Year (Nowruz) is celebrated in March.

"nawa barshara subhechha" (ko is missing in the sentence it should be nawa barshara ko subhechha)

Happy New Year

20:52, Kathmandu, Nepal

By the way we celebrate New Year in April.

Daisy Mariposa profile image

Daisy Mariposa 4 years ago from Orange County (Southern California) Author

Thanks for giving me the correct spelling, Vinaya.

Do you personally celebrate the New Year on December 31 / January 1 and in April? What calendar is used in Nepal?

(From the "time stamp" in your post, it looks like there's a 12-hour difference between the time in Nepal and that on the West Coast of the United States.)

Wow Daisy! This is incredible. I don't think I knew that half those languages existed. Awesome hub!

Daisy, we celebrate nine New Years in Nepal,

I believe there is 12 hours time difference between you and I.

Daisy Mariposa profile image

Tammy,

I'm sure there are many more languages than the ones listed in this Hub. My "l love you" Hub lists languages that don't appear here. I just added a Quechua translation from Lord De Cross to that Hub.

Ian,

Thanks for stopping by. One of the things I like most about HubPages is the interaction among people from many cultures, countries, backgrounds. Don't you agree?

Vinaya Ghimire profile image

Vinaya Ghimire 4 years ago from Nepal

Hello Daisy, I just came back from New Year's party. Happy New Year. Happy hubbing!

Daisy Mariposa profile image

Daisy Mariposa 4 years ago from Orange County (Southern California) Author

Ardie,

I never counted how many hours it took me to do the research. Because I have occupational certificates in Travel Management and International Business, I had a lot of reference books at home. I used those, and I used an online software tool that does translations. I also went to travel Web sites for some countries and looked for the phrase among the wealth of information the sites contained.

Before this article could appear in HubPages, I had to convince the moderators that the Hub wasn't written in a foreign language.

Daisy Mariposa profile image

Daisy Mariposa 4 years ago from Orange County (Southern California) Author

Happy 1st of nine New Years, Vinaya!

You told me that when you returned from the party, you would publish your 50th Hub...

Have you published it?

Daisy, all Thais celebrate two new years: the western new year on January 1, and the Buddhist New Year which is celebrated April 13-15. Thai-Chinese also celebrate the Chinese New Year which can fall anywhere from around January 21-February 19 depending on when the first moon of the first month of the year occurs. I am sharing this with my followers.

I love this bridging of the language barrier, and if i'm brave enough I may try a few ... once I am sure i'm not slaughtering the language with my pronunciations... this is a very good one...

Definitely interesting and useful!

Nithya (Vellur),

Thanks for reading my article and posting your comment. I had to gather the translations from many sources. Google Translate was a big help to me. I keyed in the greeting in English, and saw what the tool returned as the translation for many of the languages.

Thanks for reading my article and viewing the translations. What really interests me is that the new year has been celebrated since 153 B.C.

Happy New Year, Daisy! I enjoyed your fun hub and listening to the three versions of Auld Lang Syne--I always love that sentimental song!

Stephanie.

It's great to "see" you again. Thanks for the New Year wishes. I hope you have a wonderful year.

I thought it would be a fun addition to my article to include three entirely different versions of the same song, Auld Lang Syne, and ask readers to vote on their favorite.

Dear Daisy,

How clever of you to add these three versions of Auld Lang Syne. My speaker seemed to be missing a connection so I couldn't compare these wonderful voices. I'm a big Rod Stewart fan so I'd most likely choose his video as my favorite.

What an undertaking this must have been! Fantastic! Voted up, useful, awesome, beautiful, interesting and will certainly share.

Thanks dear Daisy and a very Happy New Year!

Audrey

Audrey (vocalcoach),

Thanks for reading my article and adding your comment. When I was revising my Hub a year or so ago, I had the idea to include a video of "someone" singing Auld Lang Syne. I found three wonderful versions, so rather than decide, I included all of them. My favorite is the Rod Stewart version.

Have a wonderful year, my friend!

Marcy,

It's nice to "see" you again. Thanks for reading my article and commenting in it.

I published this Hub three years ago. It receives page views throughout the year, not just at the end of December. The 24-hour period ending some time on December 31st was a personal record for me ... This Hub received more than 1000 page views in 24 hours!

Have a wonderful 2015!

Wow! This is amazing Daisy. "Malipayong Bag-ong Tuig!" (Bisayan, Philippines), "Maligayang Bagong Taon!" (Tagalog, Philippines) and "Frohes Neues Jahr!" in German of Happy New Year. I wish you a wonderful year 2015.

Thelma,

Happy New Year! Thanks for reading my article and posting your comment. I've published two other Hubs similar to this one ... "Merry Christmas" and "I Love You." I hope you have an opportunity to look at those.
